I pull my phone from my pocket and dial Mia’s number.

“I can’t believe you’re doing this, Daddy!” She stomps up the steps and slams the door behind her. I realize it’s early and I’m exhausted, so I don’t press call. Instead, I send her a quick text.

We need to talk. Come over when you get up. It’s important.

LILY

Waking up to a phone ringing before nine in the morning is never a good thing.

“Hello?”

“L-Lily?” I hear Charlotte’s sobbing voice.

I sit up. “Charlotte? What’s wrong?”

“M-my d-dad.”

Oh fuck! She knows. She knows. She knows.

“W-what about your dad, Char?”

“He’s being an unreasonable asshole.”

I relax. It’s not about me and her dad. “Charlotte, calm down. What’s going on? You’re going to have to start from the beginning.”

“Randy proposed.”

“Proposed?” I yelp.

“Yeah, we’re going to get married.”

Married? No wonder Linc blew a gasket.

“Dad’s so mad, he didn’t even say congratulations.”

I throw myself back on the bed and watch the ceiling fan spin. Okay, so this is not going to be an easy conversation.

“And you don’t seem all too happy either, Lily.”

My eyes widen. “Me? No, yeah, of course I am, Char. It’s just, you caught me by surprise. I was asleep thirty seconds ago.” I clear my throat. “Congratulations, that’s awesome news,” I lie. It’s not awesome news. It’s shit news. She should go to school. She should study. The only reason she wants to get married is because Linc is too strict.

“Dad said this is a mistake. He’s talking to Mom right now, I bet.”

A twinge of jealousy bubbles up inside. I know they were married, shit I’ve seen Linc and Mia together hundreds of times, kissing and hugging. But that was before. I wonder if he had anal sex with her. I wonder if they ever had moments in their marriage where they couldn’t keep their hands off each other. Now, she’s the Ex.

THE. FUCKING. EX.

I didn’t like her much before. Now?, Now, I despise her.

“Give him some time, I’m sure he’ll come around.” My fingers itch to call him. To see how I can help. Comfort him. But he’s talking to Mia, and is it really any of my business?

“Come over? Please? It’s Saturday. You don’t have class. Spend the weekend with me.”

“Me? Why me?”

“I don’t know, Lil. Because he’s not going to lose his shit with you here. I don’t want to hear what my mom’s going to say. Just…I need you Lil, please.”
