He chuckles and kisses my cheek. “Yeah, we are.”

I lie still, gazing into his perfect eyes.

Us.Him and me. And Charlotte. And…

I twist and reach for the bowl of candy on the table. “You got your trick,” I say. “Now, here’s your treat.”

He extends his hand and smacks my ass. “You are my treat.”

“Well, if you don’t want free candy—”

“No, no…” He takes the bowl. “I will accept your extra treats.”

I chuckle and balance up on one elbow, biting my lip in anticipation.

Jake digs his hand into the bowl and pauses. His fingers slowly emerge from the mountain of shiny wrappers holding the white, plastic stick.

He stares at the pregnancy test. “Anna…” he says. “Is this a trick?”

I shake my head. “No.”

“Are you sure?”

He looks at me, his eyes wide and hopeful, but he holds back his excitement.

“Yes,” I say.

“Really?”

“Yes, Jake. I’m really pregnant.”

“Really, really?”

I laugh. “I wanted to surprise on our favorite day of the year, so—”

He grabs me and pulls me up onto his lap, dropping the stick and shoving the bowl to the floor. I laugh hard, getting lost in a wave of happiness as he embraces me against him.

“Does this mean we’re happy?” I ask.

“Anna…” He kisses my head. “I have never been happier in my whole life.”

I cup his face to look at him, seeing the tears swelling in his brown and blue eyes. “Yeah?”

He buries his face in my chest. “I love you,” he says.

I kiss his forehead. “I love you, too.”

“There’s no way you can top this next year.”

I laugh. “Don’t be too sure.”

“No, I mean it. This…” He looks up and takes a deep breath. “You’re so amazing.”

We kiss, barely holding it together.
