“That’s for me to know and you to find out.”
“I never thought I’d see the day.”
“That makes two of us,” I said, glancing at the timer. “You all set for tomorrow?”
“Yeah. Noah’s really excited. I tried telling him again that I’d be happy with a DJ, but he said his mom would’ve insisted on a band, so he’s not budging.”
“He’s probably right.”
“I know,” she said, “But it’s four times the price.”
“Change your dress for a less expensive one then.”
She gasped. “I will do no such thing! You agreed my dress is perfect for me!”
I waited for her to get it.
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
She sighed. “I see what you did there.”
“I’m glad,” I said. “Have fun having his back tomorrow.”
“Thanks for not letting me become bridezilla.”
“You’re welcome,” I said as the egg timer dinged. “Thanks for letting me go before I burn my cookies.”
“Cookies?! Oh my gosh, what kind?!”
“Goodnight, Grace.” I hung up and crouched down to look in the oven, opening it a second later and turning it off. When the steam dissipated, I pulled the cookie trays out and set them on the cooling racks I borrowed from the café since the ones I ordered from Amazon wouldn’t be here for a few more days.
I didn’t want to get ahead of myself, but they looked pretty good. I mean, you can’t go wrong with chocolate and marshmallows. The question was whether I put enough brown sugar and crushed graham cracker in the cookie dough itself.
I touched a finger to the edge of one of the cookies to see how crisp it was, and my phone rang again. If I were a betting woman, I would’ve guessed it was Grace calling back to ask how my experiment went, so I was surprised when I saw Oliver’s handsome face pop up.
“Why, hello.”
“Hey,” he said. “What are you up to?”
I wracked my brain for the sexiest way to answer him. “Making s’mores cookies in my silk pajamas.”
“The skimpy green ones?”
“Mayyybe.”
He took a deep breath as if he were standing there drinking me in.
“To what do I owe the pleasure of your call?”
“I just wanted to hear your voice,” he said. “Since you’re the only person who isn’t pissed at me right now.”
“Oh? Why?”
“Filming’s running late, and everyone else wants to call it a night, but I said we have to finish because I have plans tomorrow.”
“Am I your plans?”
