Completely taken aback by what he said, I knew I needed to choose my words carefully.
“I don’t like this, any of it … the fact that she works for you and the fact that her roommate is Spencer’s new nanny. It’s too much of a coincidence. And I’m not interested in her the way you think,” I said, but I was lying to myself and Rowan. Of course I was fucking interested, but I wasn’t planning to make any moves until she quit working as an escort. Quit selling herself for money. I’d fucked a lot of other women, trying to get her out of my head, but none of them compared to her. I was still very much hung up on her. I don’t think there was anything I could do to not be hung up on her.
“Do you really think Veronica could have set all that up?” Matthews asked me seriously. “I have no idea who made a phone call to Spencer’s new nanny, but I am going to find out. In the meantime, you shouldn’t get involved in her affairs. She’s one of the highest paid girls at Emperor,” he added, looking directly in my eyes. Translation: her money was his money.
I wanted to punch him. However, he was right—one thing I’d never admit to him, though. I didn’t think Veronica had it in her to make her roommate go and pretend to be Spencer’s escort, unless she’d found out that he was my brother so she could take advantage of his position.
“I don’t fucking care! I will get you someone else. I’ll be dealing with her clients personally,” I growled, suddenly even more pissed with Matthews. My gut was telling me that this whole thing was way too much of a coincidence. There had to be something else.
“This is going to end badly, I can already sense it,” Rowan warned me.
“No, it won’t. Besides, have I ever let you down thus far? We both know I always deliver on my promises.” I knew that at some point I would have to talk to Veronica’s roommate, Spencer’s new nanny.
Several hours later, a perfect opportunity came up when Mum texted me saying I was invited for Sunday dinner and Spencer’s new nanny was going to be there. Bingo…
Chapter Nine
Veronica
Laura arrived home on Sunday night acting like she was ready to murder someone— I had never seen her so pissed off. We had a lot to catch up on since she’d snuck out last week, claiming she had errands to run. She still hadn’t told me what had happened between her and the PM, A.K.A. her new boss, in that club a week ago. From what I saw on that Friday, he was overbearing but obviously totally obsessed with her.
Rupert had seemed shocked when I’d told him about my impoverished upbringing. We didn’t know each other at all, but so far, I knew enough to figure out that I wanted him. He was the best lay I’d ever had, but our relationship wouldn’t be going anywhere unless he changed his attitude towards me.
“I guess the family dinner didn’t go well?” I asked Laura after she finally stopped slamming the cupboards. I bet Spencer Banks had pissed her off again. I had only ever seen her like that when she was around Jake and he did something to upset her.
“Have you got any wine? I really need something stronger. I had an altercation with Rupert, not Spencer, for a change." She looked at me with stormy green eyes. Laura was a beautiful girl and the complete opposite of me—headstrong but shy at the same time. I winked at her.
“Of course. And I got us a rosé this time around.” I walked over to the fridge. It was scorching hot in London still. I opened the wine and took some ice out of the freezer. Our apartment was boiling and we needed a decent fan. Some days it felt like a sauna in here despite all the windows being open. “So tell me what happened, and why was Rupert even there?”
I handed her a glass and made myself comfortable on our sofa.
“It was a family dinner. All Spencer’s brothers were there, including the famous actor, Andrew Banks.” She took a generous sip. “Anyway, Rupert made me so mad that I kicked him in the nuts.”
I laughed, bringing my hands to my mouth. I don’t know if I was in total shock or disbelief.
“You didn’t!”I practically shrilled.
Her eyes gleamed with satisfaction, which only meant one thing. I laughed loudly, imagining this whole incident.
“He told me I had orchestrated this whole thing with Spencer in order to be hired as a nanny for Maja so I could get close to him! Then he said you were probably involved, too, and that you seduced him back in Greece. All because we both want to take advantage of Spencer’s position as PM,” she explained.
I couldn’t help but laugh at how absurd this all was!
I drank some wine. Rupert had a wild imagination, but none of what he’d said made any sense. I had my own money, so why would I even think of this?
“That man is something else,” I muttered. “Don’t worry about him too much. He’s probably still in shock because I now work for him. He can’t get over the fact that I’m an escort girl.”
Rupert could say whatever he wanted, but he couldn’t deny our mutual attraction. My body reacted whenever he was close, and I sensed he wanted me, too.I had felt it on many occasions now.
“He made me so mad! He thinks we both orchestrated this whole thing. You know, when Spencer mistook me for an escort…” she scoffed.
Spencer was every woman’s wet dream, especially holding the powerful position that he did. If that wasn’t enough, he was also a single father to a sweet little nine-year-old. He was incredibly handsome, and as far as I knew, he didn’t date, ever. Laura had stood up to him and wasn’t fazed by his position or questionable attitude. But she liked him. There was a definite attraction between them, which she continued to deny whenever I brought it up. However, Laura was apprehensive. He was, after all, her boss, and if things went badly, it could cause another scandal.
“He doesn’t trust me, but we both know that this is just a freaky coincidence. Spencer being Rupert’s brother … seriously, what are the odds?” I asked as a cold shiver crawled down my spine. I felt like the universe was playing with my life, trying to figure out how many more obstacles she could throw my way.
“Yeah, it really is pretty unbelievable,” Laura muttered, and then started telling me about her mother being sick again. She had some liver problems and Laura was really worried about her, so we continued discussing available options.
That night, I went to bed anxious about my future in the club. Especially because Rupert would now watch my every move and probably mess with my clientele. I’d finally found the man who made my heart flutter, the guy I’d been thinking about for the last two years, and I was afraid. Now that I’d seen him in real life, I had no idea where this was going. It was one huge unknown. I had several new and older clients this upcoming week. I enjoyed sex with them. All the men who hired escorts were sophisticated, charming, and wealthy. There was the odd one that made me feel small, but Rowan ran robust security checks on all his members.
