“Yes, I'm Winnie. I don't think we've met, Mrs.–”
“Call me Mrs. Turner. I worked with Ted for a while in New York City, but I am here now. I never saw him settling down, to be honest. He's a billionaire with potential and for a while, I was sure he was going to keep running around in circles looking for the right one. I guess you are the right one.”
I chuckle lightly, wondering why everyone thought absolutely the same thing about Ted. Was every billionaire bound to not find love?
“Well, I guess I am the one then.”
We burst into laughter and clink our glasses in celebration. I sip my champagne, happy to have met a new person with such an amazing sense of humor.
In a beat, Ted is by my side, a champagne flute in his right hand. He drags me to the side as he greets Mrs. Turner with a cheerful smile and whispers that it is time for the toast.
Clinking his flute with the fork on the table, he succeeded in gathering everyone together, making sure that Luna and Isla were between us. He held Isla while I held the ever-adventurous Luna down.
“I'm happy that you all were able to make it to this party even though it was so impromptu. I for one, apologize because I kind of forgot about the birthday, which I know speaks badly of me as a father. You can't blame me though, I'm new to this fatherhood thing.”
The crowd bursts into laughter, and I know I love this Ted, the Ted that could control the crowd and make them feel what he felt at that moment, but I still couldn't admit to that yet.
“Well, I called this party in honor of my babies, Luna and Isla, who are both two years old today. It's been a bumpy ride as some of you know, from losing them to going through hell to get them back. As we celebrate them today, I reckon we'll celebrate more years of them as they grow in love, joy, and harmony.”
“To Luna and Isla!”
“To Luna and Isla!” the crowd chants, having been released from the spell of handsome Ted for a while.
Ted looks at me as if he has more to say, as if what he had just said moments ago was just a quarter of what he wanted to say. Taking my hand, we managed to find our way to the patio that overlooks the pool despite the traffic of people celebrating in the room. I really love this magnificent new mansion Ted bought.
“You know I care so much for you, Winnie. Having abandoned you once, it will be a sin against God and man to abandon you again, as you know what I have for you is genuine and I cannot find it anywhere else.”
I wonder where this is leading, and I smile when he gets down on one knee, stands up quickly, and dusts his trousers amidst laughter.
“What is wrong with you, Ted fucking Gates, you were about to propose to me again, just now.”
“I thought of re-proposing, my love, but I just discovered that my ring is still in the mall.”
“Oh, Ted–”
I am hugging him, all of us together, everything, everyone all at once. I stare at Luna who is muttering something incomprehensible, Isla whose thumb is in her mouth, and my prize, Ted, who returns the stare.
It is all I have ever wanted, and it is where I always wanted to be.
CHAPTER 21
Ted
“I could swear that something new always pops up with you two. It's like I neither know my best friend nor my sister anymore!” Austin heaves a sigh as he raises his hand to the air and backs down in a dramatic motion, while we both sit at the patio of the house.
“I'm sorry, man.” That's all I can say as I sip my beer, watching my best friend shake his head as he still tries to process the information he just received.
“So, Luna isn't just you and Winnie’s real daughter, but she has a twin too?!” he repeats for the umpteenth time in disbelief. I'm so close to jokingly asking if his ear needs aid or if his eyes didn't see the proof earlier on at the twins' birthday party, but I kick against it, taking another sip of my beer.
He turns to look at me, “You know if I had found out about this back then, I’d have kicked your ass? I mean, an intensive care bad.” He quirks a brow at me, picking up his bottle of beer from the table before us.
“I bet,” I chuckle merrily, as I imagine how bad it’ll have been, considering that he was with the military then. He’d have let hell loose, and I’d still be healing from it till now, that’s if I survived it.
“I’m sorry, man. ” I say, briefly patting him on his shoulder before I lean back in my chair and enjoy the evening breeze sweeping through.
“You’re sorry for what, exactly? For getting my sister pregnant and not realizing until later? Or for sleeping with her when I entrusted her in your care on her birthday?” he asks, a playful scowl on his face.
“Uhm… None?” I offer, biting back a fit of laughter.
