“So, what do I tell Lucia? She's already here to meet you.” I roll my eyes at the fact that my father is actually more concerned about my settling down with a total stranger than my health. That's good to know.
“I can't do this now father, I have something to attend to,” I say, getting weary of his whining already.
“Lucia is right here-”
I cut the call.
My phone rings again, I know it'll be Father, so I ignore it and make my way out of my room.
He’ll stop calling when he finally gets the message.
I need to clear my head.
My stomach grumbles, reminding me that I haven't eaten food since I got home last night.
So, I decide to go to the kitchen, to see what I can grab or make.
It’s too bad Mama isn't at home now. She would have intervened to help fix something for her big baby boy.
I let out a sigh and kept walking to the kitchen.
A soft, beautiful voice stops me as I get close to the kitchen door.
Shit, I forgot Winnie is still right here with Luna. And I still can't face her.
“Damn it.” I grit my teeth in frustration. I have two options now. It's either I get in there, act like she isn't there, and fix my food, or I just walk back to my room and die of hunger.
My stomach growls again, reminding me that death by hunger might be worse than facing my fears. What's the worst that can happen?
I take a bold step further till I'm standing halfway by the kitchen doorway, and I see her.
She has her back to me, fixing Luna’s breakfast while Luna is playing and gnawing on her favorite bunny.
An involuntary smile plays on my lips as I watch my hungry baby take it out on the poor bunny.
My attention goes back to Winnie.
She looks so perfect in there, like she is born into the role of being a mother.
I couldn't help but imagine that she was Luna’s mother and my wife, standing right there fixing breakfast for the family.
I'll rain kisses on her neck, distract her, and play with Luna while we all laugh and have a good time as one perfect little family.
But all a man can do right now is dream.
And Austin? My head will be on a platter in a blink. He’ll never forgive me for taking advantage of Winnie when, in fact, I am supposed to be a big brother figure to her.
I get a little bit too comfortable watching her do her thing that my hunger is forgotten.
I lean on the doorframe, concealed from her sight, yet I can still see her clearly.
She turns over to Luna with a smile on her face and places Luna’s food on her table.
I watch them both do their thing, and the space in my chest swells with warmth and stings painfully, knowing that this isn't my reality.
It's just a visible daydream I don't want to end.
My focus and awareness are back as I see that Winnie is done and will catch me stalking if I do not leave now.
