I flop onto the sofa beside her, feeling tired but knowing that the tiredness is filled with a joyful feeling of accomplishment.
She is holding and caressing my hand, with sympathy written all over her features.
“I am so sorry you had to go through all that, dear. I do not even wish such a thing for anyone.”
“All that matters is that you're out of there and never going back.”
“I’m a good woman, so I have not filed for a divorce. I don't consider it necessary because, to me, it destroys the good times we shared together. If I filed for a divorce, the whole world would hear the story of Doctor Gates!”
I nod.
“Well, there's a remainder of the wine. I can get it and we can make a toast to no divorce.” I quickly say, getting to my feet so I do not end up giving out what I'm not meant to.
“I'd like that!” she mutters while laughing.
I jump to my feet, walking briskly to the kitchen. There, I retrieved the champagne and two flutes.
“We are really making a toast that says no divorce! My God, Winnie, you never cease to amaze me.”
“I am the comic relief in your life, Mrs. Grace Gates.” I boasted, smiling hugely at her while I turned the champagne into our flutes.
I urge her to stand up, and I can tell from the laughter and the way she hurriedly gets to her feet that she had a lot of fun as a college girl.
“Here's a toast to no divorce!”
I scream as we clink glasses.
“I repeat, I'm grateful that you are the one my son impregnated and not any of those girls he brought home when you weren't here. You are the chosen one.”
“Wait, what?” I mutter in the struggle to swallow the champagne in my mouth, “Ted brought other women home?”
“Yes, he did. Now refill my glass and I will tell you about the women Ted saw in New York while you were at the facility. The ones his father literally shoved down his throat, just so he could get him married soon enough.” She says with a giggle, and I know the champagne is already taking a toil.
I sip my champagne with a smile, ready to listen to the tale of Ted and the women in his life who are not me.
Don't miss the sarcasm in my tone.
CHAPTER 23
Ted
“Where are you taking me to?” Winnie asks, a bright smile graces her face as I pull open the passenger door for her.
“I'm glad you wore what I sent in for you,” I say, as I check her out. The red dress I got for her, grabbing her perfectly and showing off her curves, is her color, and I'm glad I chose it right.
“Like I had a choice?” She laughs as she sits in the car like the queen she is.
I lean on the car, and my eyes are on her beautiful face, I can't help the smirk that comes on my face as I see she also has her smokey eyes on. It's been forever.
“Your eyes,” I comment, not hiding the desire in my voice.
“Thank you,” she says shyly, pushing back the stray strand of hair from her face to behind her ear. Can we go already?” she asks, obviously feeling the heat that began running between us.
“Yes,” I say with a smile, as I close her door gently, before going over to my side of the car and letting myself in.
“Where are we going?” she asks again, as I start up my car ignition.
“You’ll see,” I flash her a sweet smile, and drive out the garage.
