With the two attempts to either kill or injure her, she was obviously in danger, and while he’d initially believed Ramsey was behind this, it seems as if he’d been wrong.
Her brother was.
And that was yet someone else now on Jace’s list of people to deal with.
Of course, the likelihood was that Trevor and Ramsey were in on this together and that Trevor was simply carrying out his father’s wishes.
“That text is the reason I came to Ruby instead of the cops,” Kit murmured.
He hated the fear this had put in her voice and eyes. Kit was usually fearless. Or at least she masked the fear, but she wasn’t doing a good job of that now.
“I wasn’t sure who I could trust in San Antonio PD, Bandera Bluffs or anywhere else for that matter since the text doesn’t say where he’s assigned,” Kit added. “Heck, I can’t even be sure it is a cop. Maybe that’s some kind of code name.”
True. But if Trevor did have a dirty police officer in his pocket, it was going to make silencing his sister a whole lot easier. At least it would be if Kit didn’t have Maverick Ops protecting her.
She did.
No way would Jace turn down this job.
“Jace, I’m so sorry,” Kit repeated, shifting her attention to him.
She was no doubt about to embellish that, but Jace cut her off. “Don’t apologize for an asshole who doesn’t want the truth to come out. I’m guessing if Marvin testifies, whatever he says could end up implicating Trevor?”
Kit nodded.
He hated to ask this next question, but he had no choice. “And you? Could it implicate you?”
She blinked, maybe even had a bad kneejerk reaction to him basically asking her if she was a criminal like her father. “No, I never personally witnessed my father or brother committing a crime. Yes, I did plenty of legal work that involved both of them. Contracts and such. There were certainly some questionable deals, but I’m sure they kept me out of the loop on the down and dirty stuff.”
“Because they knew you wouldn’t settle for it?” Jace speculated.
Kit opened her mouth, closed it, and it seemed to Jace as if she changed her mind about what she’d been about to say. “They didn’t fully trust me.”
That could turn out to be a blessing because if Marvin did end up testifying, it likely wouldn’t lead to Kit being arrested for something her father and brother had done.
“Trevor has a son,” Kit went on. “Brandon. He’s nineteen and a criminal justice major at college. He wants to be a cop,” she added in a mutter. “And I don’t believe he has any part in this.”
“You don’t believe it, or you don’t want to believe it?” Jericho pressed.
“The first,” she was quick to say. “Brandon has a lot of disdain for his father and grandfather and has essentially disowned them. The only reason Brandon sees either of them is because he’s still close to his mother.”
Interesting. And that led Jace to the next question he’d been mulling over.
“Why include me in this?” he pressed. “Why would your family believe that taking me would be the best way to get to you? Why not use Brandon since he’s your nephew?”
No fast answer this time, and she dodged his gaze. Not a good sign. “My father learned about those other times we’ve been together,” she finally said. “Those other times after the annulment,” Kit spelled out.
Jace repeated his well, shit, but this time he said it aloud.
Jericho lifted his eyebrow. “I’m guessing you two hooked up after your marriage went south.”
“Yeah,” Jace verified.
While he wanted to say he hadn’t noticed any one following or observing Kit and him, Jace couldn’t swear to it. His dick became commander-in-chief whenever he was around Kit.
And, yes, maybe his heart, too.
But it was mostly dick-thinking, and that particular source of thinking didn’t lead to a serious awareness of his surroundings.
