“Yes, she retired two years ago after having a mild heart attack. It scared my dad and me, but thankfully she’s okay now.”

“That must have been really scary. When my dad was shot, we were all terrified. He ended up retiring because the bullet did a lot of damage to his leg. He hated leaving the agency, but it was for the best.”

“Have you ever been shot?”

“No, but I’ve had some close calls. I’ve been shot at a few times.”

“That’s so scary, Beau.”

“It definitely scared me. One time, a bullet hit the tree right behind me. I consider myself lucky.”

Brenna shook her head in disbelief. “I don’t know how you do it.”

“It’s just part of the job. Some rustlers feel like they have nothing to lose. Just like any other law enforcement, you never know what you’re dealing with.” He shrugged.

“You mentioned that three other agents were shot the night one of them died. Are they okay now?”

“Yes, thankfully. In fact, Creed recently regained his memory and was able to identify the men who shot them and killed Mac.”

“That’s so sad about Mac. I can’t imagine how devastated his wife must have been.”

“She was. I went to the funeral, and she was a mess. I didn’t speak to her directly, but she was in shock.”

“It’s heartbreaking that he won’t get to see his daughter grow up.”

“True, but knowing Mac, he’s happy that his best friend is taking care of both his wife and daughter.”

“Are we still going to Dewey’s after this?”

“Sure, if you want.”

“Or we could just go back to my place and watch a movie.”

“How about we do both? We can stop by Dewey’s for an hour or so before heading back to your place.”

Brenna smiled at him. “I like that idea.”

Beau grinned and they finished their meal before heading over to the bar.

Brenna sat on a stool sipping on a Toasted Almond while watching people dance. Beau sat beside her with a beer in hand.

“What’s in that drink?” he asked curiously as he leaned closer to her.

She smirked. “Amaretto liqueur, coffee liqueur, and cream. It tastes like almonds, and I love it.”

“Are there really two liqueurs in that? Will you even be able to walk?”

Brenna laughed. “Don’t worry, I’m only having one. Adding cream takes the edge off, but without it, it’s a real kicker.” She offered him the glass. “Try it.”

Beau took a sip and made a face, causing Brenna to burst into laughter.

“You don’t like it?”

“It’s alright, but not my cup of tea.”

“To each their own—” Brenna stopped when she spotted Liz and Eric weaving through the crowd.

“What’s wrong?”
