I flushed, not having thought of that. “Ah, I just transferred.”
He looked around the room with his eyebrows raised. “Into everyone?” Once again, his voice didn’t match his expression.
I peered at him and popped my lips. “Yes.” I slowed down my words. “They’re my harem, and I chose them, and because of them, I’ll never need to kill turtles or transfer into anyone else again.”
Beryl crossed his arms over his chest and stepped behind me. “Do you have a problem with that?” My magic cracked on his fists.
Officer Keres’ fists twitched as he considered my words. I chewed on my bottom lip. Where was the bear of an MA agent that usually existed in the good officer’s shadow?
A bad feeling settled in my stomach.
“Kill turtles?” He asked before holding up his hand. “I don’t have time for this. We need to test your mirror.”
I nodded. “AMCM.”
Officer Keres sucked in a breath before spitting it out with a wheeze. “Fine, your AMCM.”
I held the glass up, peering at him through it. “Why?”
A dull rainbow appeared, and I frowned. My magic still coursed through him.
Another tremor ran through Officer Keres. This one so big he tilted to one side.
“Sir, are you okay?” Ashe asked.
Officer Keres clenched his fists. “Something has gone very wrong.”
Beryl raised an eyebrow. “Because you’re not calling the shots anymore?”
Officer Keres' trembles turned into full-on shaking. “Because Director Flemmings has somehow convinced half my officers I’m incompetent and welcomed the ones awaiting trial for abusing students back into our ranks.”
My blood chilled. I could’ve heard a pin drop.
Ashe’s stance widened. “If that’s true, how are you fucking here, sir?”
Officer Keres’ eyebrow furrowed. Before he could respond, Ashe lunged forward and put his superior officer in a headlock.
I jumped back in confusion, a white-knuckled grip on my AMCM.
Officer Keres threw his body forward with unnatural strength, breaking Ashe’s hold, and rolled forward. Halfway to standing, Saffron came flying from the side and knocked the officer on his ass.
I flailed backward and leaped to my stairs, clinging to them to keep from falling forward. Officer Keres rolled again and attempted to stand. This time, Beryl pinned the mage to the ground. The veins on Officer Keres’ face popped as he struggled under Beryl. Beryl flailed, his body weight somehow insufficient to keep the MA Officer pinned.
Beryl grunted. “Some help.”
Professor Garnet’s red bindings flew from his fingers and wrapped around Officer Keres’ arms and legs. It wasn’t until Ashe sat on his superior officer’s legs that he finally stilled.
“You need to detain the Director!” Officer Keres exclaimed. “She’s planning on sabotaging the reenactment. She doesn’t want unity. She wants chaos.”
I blinked, understanding his words but not how badly they contradict themselves.
“It’s why she’s gotten so chummy with Tederwinkle,” Officer Keres continued, rambling.
Ashe snapped. “Kitten, I need a gag, now.”
I raced up the steps, looking for the closest scrap of material.
“Professor, get rid of your fucking ropes,” Ashe continued barking orders below. “No magic. He’s not fucking using it on us. I’ve never heard him give out this much information before. Something’s really fucking wrong.”
