As far as she understood, Callan had been experimented on. As a result of some DNA manipulation, he’d turned into a hybrid vampire-wolf soon after leaving the lab. Then had infected a number of others, including Mack.

The royal army had rounded them all up and taken them to an undisclosed location to give them space to shift and learn about their new sub-species.

The king acknowledged them as Moretti vampires still, but they had not shared their existence with the broader vampire race.

Callan and Mack were currently residing in the castle, training to be part of the royal army.

Brooklyn had met them. Mack was a huge hybrid and cheeky. Not to mention extremely gorgeous. Yet, her heart didn’t turn into a jackhammer when he was near. Unlike that other guy who shall not be named.

He might have accused her of being sexually interested in him, but she was almost certain she’d seen lust in his eyes.

A woman knew.

Plus, she was a nurse, so Brooklyn knew she hadn’t been mistaken.

Sleeping with any of the vampires here, now that she knew it was possible, was not on her list of things to do. She was here to here to make a difference, scientifically, not fall into a dangerous vampire’s arms and get bitten.

They could easily kill her.

And Logan had made it blatantly clear he hated humans and her. Even if the two of them had chemistry.

Her story wouldn’t be the same as Sage’s. There was no love story waiting here for her. And no damn way was she giving up her humanity like her boss.

BROOKLYN LEANED BACK in her chair and yawned. It was getting late. Her entire body clock had gone through a change to fit into this new world.

She now started work at three in the afternoon and finished around ten at night. Sometimes a little later, depending on how many warriors got themselves shot with serum.

A lot these days.

Because vampires were nocturnal, her hours meant she got four or five hours with Sage, Dr. Abbot, and Anna, who also worked in the medical center. Then she had dinner and tried to get to sleep by two in the morning and wake eight hours later.

It left her five free hours before she started work again. The castle was usually quiet during the middle of the day, but not always.

In truth, despite the initial shock, Brooklyn was still coming to grips with the fact vampires existed.

Taking this unique opportunity and pivoting from her original life purpose had been a big decision. One she hadn’t been given a lot of time to make.

But it was a good opportunity.

One that could make a huge difference and finally provide her with the relief from the guilt she carried around every day.

Her twin brother, Brad, had died when they were children.

And it was her fault.

No one blamed her, except herself.

Then again, no one else knew the truth.

It was why she had become a nurse, then a scientist. Brad had been a type 1 diabetic. You didn’t need to have a PhD to know that he’d lacked in the womb, while she had not.

Science.

But it wasn’t that he was a diabetic that had killed him—okay, yes, it was—but there was more to the story than just that.

Brooklyn had hidden the nose spray that was essential to saving his life should he have a seizure.

Guess what...he had a seizure.
