Our eyes connected, and I knew he felt guilty.
“For now, I’ll leave it alone. But you better keep me updated.”
“Promise, I’ll call you.” She ended the call, and Aydin stood against the door of the hallway.
“Where’s Reggie?”
“I sent him home and switched him with two more guys,” Aydin responded.
“Was he hit?” I jumped up and stood in front of him.
“He’s fine. We change shifts often,” Nasir spoke.
“Are you two hungry? We have leftovers,” I suggested, heading to the kitchen.
“Before we hit the road, we can eat.”
We still had lasagna, baked potato, and chicken leftover because I liked to overcook even when I was home. I moved around in the kitchen, still a little shaken up from what happened and prayed Addison was caught soon. I felt a pair of strong hands around me and released a long-held breath. I turned the oven on and unwrapped the chicken, two potatoes, and a pan of lasagna before I slid them in the oven.
“Talk to me.”
“I’m worried about you.”
“I’ll be fine.”
“Glad you were with me this time.”
I turned around to face him.
“I apologize for letting them get so close to you.”
“You have nothing to apologize for.”
“It’s my job to protect you.”
“And you have.” I stood on my tippy toes and reached an arm around his neck, fixated on his lips.
“She’s going to pay.”
“Long as you don’t get hurt.”
“My job is dangerous, baby.”
“That’s what scares me.”
“She’ll show her face, but there’s something I need to tell you.”
“What?”
“You can’t go back to your place again.”
I paused to look in his eyes, pushing back out of his hold.
“So, I’m a prisoner forever.”
“No, just a little longer until we can grab Tristan or this guy that bumped into you.”
“Addison’s not about to control my life, Aydin.”
