“Put people on his house.”

“No updates on her place in Chicago?” Carly said.

“Tristan is in the wind and more than likely with her.” I slid my hands in my pockets.

“He’s on the intelligence committee.” Nicco read through the file.

“If we alert too soon, it’ll backfire on us,” I said.

“So we play the background,” Nasir responded.

“Until they make another move.”

“By the way things are going, it won’t be long,” Nicco called out.

“Double protection around the clock on Amelia’s parents’ home, my place, and my parents’.”

“Did you tell Wesley?”

“I’m going to talk to him tomorrow.”

“All right.”

“Try to get some sleep, boss.” Nicco stood, and we shook hands.

“Thanks for sticking with her.”

“She’s like a sister to me now.”

After my meeting, I picked up Amelia and instead of going out to eat, we ordered takeout and came straight home. I pushed the door open and reset the alarm, Reggie honked the horn, and I waved before locking the door. Amelia carried a bag of her favorite Mexican food over to the table, removed her jacket, and kicked off her shoes.

“I’m going to give you a bath.”

“Come sit first.”

She held her arm out for me, and I picked her up, sat, and placed her on my lap.

“You look tired.”

“No more than usual.”

“Are you tired of me?”

“Where did that come from?”

I rubbed a hand up and down her back.

“Sorry my life became an endless rollercoaster for you.”

“Have I said that to you?”

“No, but—”

I shushed her and caressed her cheek.

“I would never grow tired of you.”

“It’s my fault you’re in this mess.”
