“He’s a sorry excuse of a man.”

“Tell me about it, but I need to jump in the shower and head to bed. First day is tomorrow.”

“Wow! That’s fast.”

“They’ll probably give me a tour and fill out paperwork.”

“That’s true.”

“Talk tomorrow.”

“So no breakfast in the morning?”

I shook my head in the mirror. Depending on our schedules, one of us would get up and cook breakfast if we had the time and invite the other person over.

“Not this time, crazy lady.”

She chuckled.

“All right, call me on your lunch break tomorrow.”

“Will do. Good night.”

“Night.”

The next morning.

I slammed my hand down on the alarm to turn it off and rubbed a hand down my face. Thirty minutes later, after showering and getting dressed, I parked in the visitors section and went to the front door, rubbing my stomach to calm my nerves.

“You can do this,” I mumbled to myself, opened the front door of TN Security, smiled, and walked up to the reception desk.

“Hi, give me a minute,” the girl at the front desk requested. She looked overwhelmed with the amount of calls constantly going off. I stood at the corner of the desk, while people came and went through the office. The place was a ten-story building in downtown Memphis, adjacent to my favorite barbeque spot.

“Sorry about that, how can I help you?”

“Hi, I was left a voice message yesterday about the secretary position.”

“What’s your name?”

She started to type on her computer.

“Amelia Edwards.”

“Oh, yes, that was me. I’m Molly, the front receptionist.”

“Hi, nice to meet you.”

“So, I know you applied for the secretary position, but it’s been taken.”

“Huh… that fast?”

“Yeah. I need to hurry up and get things moving. Your new position is Operations manager and assistant to the owner.”

“Wait, Operations manager?” I dropped my hands to my side.

“I know, but your resume shows you have experience, and you went to school for accounting.”

“Well…”
