“He doesn’t hate you. He’s just an asshole.”

“Okay, but please don’t volunteer me for any other events.”

She laughed, and we continued to discuss the fundraiser and her upcoming wedding plans.

Forty minutes later, I left work early, and Molly closed the office, so I decided to run by the nail shop to get a last-minute fill in before the weekend. Dani called, and I answered as I parked the car in front of the shop I frequent.

“Hello.” I stepped out and closed the door, strolling to the front entrance.

“How was work?”

“It was good for the most part.” I held my hand out to the receptionist, and she motioned for me to take the first seat at the front bar.

“The new boss?”

“Hard to tell.”

“Hard to tell what?”

“He’s one minute avoiding me and the next minute yelling at me.”

“Wait, yelling about what?”

“Well not yelling exactly, but he’s really big and grouchy.”

“What!” She laughed through the phone.

“If you’re going to laugh at me, I’m hanging up.”

“I’m sorry, but that’s hilarious.”

“You find anything funny at my expense.”

She cackled, and I chuckled under my breath.

“Where are you at?”

“At the nail salon.”

“Ooh, someone’s getting pretty for a date.”

“It’s not a date.”

“You haven’t gone out in months. Amelia, relax a little.”

“For your information, I am relaxed. I plan on having a good time, but I’m not worried about your little setup.”

“He’s a cool guy.”

“Again, I’m going to get free food and drink.”

“Ugh, you’re such a snob.”

I giggled and changed hands for the technician to work on my left index finger.

“Where are we going?”

“A nice restaurant.”
