“No, I want to do my own thing, and I’m close to doing that now.”
I understood her wanting to have independence and creating her own lane with a business of her own. At first, she was hesitant to take my money, but she got over it quickly when I made sure she knew I wouldn’t have anything to do with the work that she did.
“You’ll never have to worry or stress again about Addison or her family.”
“I can’t believe she tried to kill me.”
“We’ve dealt with a lot of crazy killers before, but to have it so close to home was eye opening.”
“All right, we’re on vacation. Let’s forget about the Chatsworths and focus on us.”
“I like the way your mind works.”
“I knew you’d see it my way.”
Amelia picked up a strawberry and fed it to me.
Two days later, I was in the office with my team, going over updates. Amelia was at her office, and I had security through her building, plus cameras inside and out to watch everyone who came and went. At first, she tried to protest, but my priority was her safety.
“So, I will take on two cases this week.” Nasir passed the case file over to me.
“Who are we monitoring?”
“One of my contacts at the CIA said we need to extract a witness.”
“Do you trust this contact?”
“Hard to say.”
“I think you should take backup.”
“Montana,” Nicco remarked.
“I’m not sure we should take the job.”
“What are you thinking?”
“We have to factor in what this witness knows,” I said.
“I’ll do a little more digging,” Nasir announced and closed the file.
Nicco and I talked as we headed out of the conference room when I heard loud yelling. I followed the noise to the front entrance of the office and saw Senator Edgar in Amelia’s face.
“Can I help you with something, Senator?”
I pulled Amelia behind me.
“I want her arrested.”
“Your daughter’s the reason for how she ended up!” Amelia shouted, then Edgar tried to reach over and grab her.
“Senator or no senator, never in your life try to put your hands on her.” I gritted my teeth and pushed him back. His security tried to get in the middle, but Nicco and Nasir stopped them.
“I came up here to surprise you with lunch, and he saw me talking to Molly,” Amelia started, and I released Edgar.
“Addison was right about you.” Edgar reached in his pocket and pulled out his phone.
“Addison was sick, and she tried to kill her and me.”
