Kalani’s eyebrows shot up. “What?”

She nodded, still in disbelief herself. The discovery had felt so violating. She didn’t want to think about what someone had done with any images they’d captured.

“I found it when I was looking for the ring,” she told him.

His eyebrows remained suspended. “And you didn’t report this?”

How did she explain that? “I’m trying not to draw any unnecessary attention to myself.”

He frowned. “I’m going to send one of my guys to pick that up. That’s not okay, Maddie.”

“I know.”

“Anything else?” he asked one last time as he studied her face.

She considered telling him about the threats she’d received. But then he might dig deep enough to find out about her mugshot also. That was her ultimate fear.

She needed to keep her past in the past.

She’d told him enough, she decided.

For that matter, Maddie prayed she hadn’t told him too much.

CHAPTER

FIFTY-TWO

Tonight is the night.

Only no one knows except me.

I smile at the thought, at my gloriously deadly secret.

Soon, people will know.

Justice will be served.

People will get what they deserve.

Including me.

This morning, I’d stood in the distance and watched everything as it played out.

The scene at the beach brought me great delight.

Killing Logan hadn’t originally been a part of my plan. I’d caught her watching me, and I’d seen the look in her eyes. She was suspicious. I couldn’t take the chance that she might talk.

So, using someone else’s name, I’d asked her to meet. She’d said yes, which wasn’t surprising considering the name I’d used.

People aren’t going to treat me like I’m a nobody, like I’m unworthy.

I worked for so long on my plan for today. Everything has to be in place.

And I think it is.

The events of this evening will be one of my greatest accomplishments.

I take a bite of my pineapple as I stand outside the resort.
