I can’t help but laugh, yet self-consciously move my arm over my boobs.
“Girl please, don’t even try to pretend Nash doesn’t motorboat you.”
“Ariella, for goodness sakes,” my cheeks flush. “What is with you today?”
“I’m bored.”
“Why didn’t you say earlier? I could have arranged for us to go out today.”
“I wasn’t in the mood,” she says. “How about you bring Nash up here?”
“Would you want that?” I ask in surprise. Usually, she doesn’t like anyone outside of family and close friends knowing where she lives.
“He’s in your life. You guys are getting closer. It’s written all over your face, sis. This guy means a lot to you. So that means I should get to know him. Do you think he could get me Aidan Gass’s autograph? That man is fine.”
“No.”
She pokes out her tongue at me. “Mama can’t make it here next weekend, neither can dad. I think they’re doing something together. What do you think is going on? Are they getting back together?”
“She’s married to someone else,” I remind her.
“He doesn’t count. Do they even live in the same house?”
“Of course they do. What kind of question is that?”
“I’ve met him once. She never talks about him. What is the deal? She is spending a lot of time at dad’s,” she frowns. “I’m glad. I think they need each other. Mama is such a nitwit sometimes. Why she divorced dad is beyond me. They’re soulmates.” She pauses and looks at me. “No offence.”
“Galen isn’t Mama’s soulmate.”
“He definitely is not. So, I was gonna say maybe you should add that to the list.”
I’m getting whiplash from this conversation. “Add what?”
“Finding Galen.”
“Ari, I don’t want to talk about that.”
“But don’t you want to know, Tia? It’s been killing me hearing about him all these years and he’s not my dad.”
Drinking some coffee, I try to gather my thoughts about my father. He’ll never be my dad, even if we meet and he gets to know me. Everyone is going on about me finding him and it’s getting tedious. “I won’t lie and say I haven’t thought about it, but I don’t want it enough.”
“What does that mean?”
“It could do more harm than good. It could upend his life, mine, Mama’s.”
“You only need to think about you,” she points out.
“I have thought about it Ari, and I’ve already concluded I don’t want to find him. I have everything I need.” I reach out and touch her hand.
“Sappy little shit,” she grins. “Okay, so anyway, back to what we were talking about.”
“Which topic?” I ask sarcastically. “You’ve started at least three conversation threads in the last five minutes.”
“Bringing Nash here. Tomorrow? We can drive down to the beach. I’ll get Eliza to sort out a picnic.”
“Ari-”
“If you ask him, he’ll make himself available. Trust me, I saw how he looks at you. He’s smitten. While you’re driving up, you can tell him about his bitch of an ex. He won’t be able to do anything about it. Then I can strategize with him about how to deal with her skanky ass.”
