Jenny smiled at her. “Great! Ready to go?”

“Let me run and grab my backpack.”

She hurried into the back where the personal lockers were kept. Just as she opened hers, Ares stepped out from his office. He folded his arms across his chest as he leaned in the doorway.

“How was your first night?”

“I think I did a good job. I enjoyed it.”

“Good.” He looked around, probably making sure no one was nearby. “Hunter will pick you up tomorrow night at nine.”

“Okay. Night.”

“Good night, sweetheart.”

She smiled, and all the while felt his gaze as she hurried away.

Chapter Nine

Adira crashed as soon as she got home and slept until ten the next morning. Livia smiled at her as she walked into the kitchen, searching for coffee.

“So, how was it?”

Adira yawned. “Different.”

“Different good or different bad?”

Grabbing a mug, she fixed her caffeine and then sat down at the table. “I took a moment to take it in. You know? I watched the women dance. Listened to men turn into assholes. I wondered if I had the guts to take that on. To put myself in a situation where men are going to subjectify me, because even though I’m not a dancer, I’m still a woman in a man-oriented club.”

“And?”

“I took the job.”

“To challenge yourself?”

“Yeah.”

“Do you work tonight?”

She shook her head. “Hunter is picking me up to go to the biker party.”

“I’ll be there, so I can watch over you,” Livia said, then hesitated. “Just please be careful of Hunter and Ares.”

“Why? Do they hurt women?”

“Oh, no! Nothing like that. But they can melt your panties right off your body, so protect your heart.”

“Don’t worry, I have no plans to fall in love again.” Adira reached out and took hold of one her friend’s hands. “Thank you. You’ve been a lifesaver.”

“Anytime. Now, we both have the day off. How about we go to the mall and shop?”

“Okay. I could use a couple of black dresses for work.”

Hunter swore as he disconnected the call. He wanted to throw the phone against the wall, but refrained. He’d already broken two others and didn’t want to have to explain again why his cell was a mangled heap.

“Trouble?” Ares asked.
