She did a jiggle in her seat. ‘It’s so exciting! With that, the TV show, and the exhibition tour, it’s going to be a busy couple of years.’

‘It certainly is, and when it eventually calms down a bit, you’ll be people’s first choice for consultancy work.’

Sophia nodded. ‘I’m so lucky. I could never have imagined my life would turn out this way.’

‘You put in the work and never gave up, even when everything was against you. You deserve this.’

Isaac eased the car to a stop outside the gate to their house, a wooden sign on it reading ‘Shady Acres House & Yoga Studio’.

Sophia leaned over and kissed his cheek. ‘I’ll open the gate. You go on and I’ll follow you up to the house.’

Isaac was lifting the metal detector he’d borrowed from Maggie from the boot of his car when Sophia strolled around the corner.

‘What on earth is that for?’

He rubbed the back of his neck. ‘I lost my necklace somewhere in the long grass near the pool and can’t find it.’

‘Oh. Do you know how to use that?’

‘Turn it on and wave it about?’

Sophia smirked. ‘According to Estelle, that’s how most men approach a problem… Did Maggie show you how to ground balance it? How to set the thresholds, the modes, the sensitivity?’

‘Er…’

‘Did she run through any of the setup and functions with you?’

Isaac pulled an embarrassed face. ‘I think she just expected…’

Sophia rolled her eyes. ‘Me to use it?’

Giving her a sheepish smile, he nodded.

She glanced at her watch, then at the blue sky.

‘There’s nearly an hour and a half before sunset. Want me to have a quick look?’

Isaac’s tummy turned over with relief and excitement. ‘Yes, thank you.’

Sophia took it from him. ‘Near the pool? Right side or left?’

‘Left. Where we usually get in.’

He took her bag from the car and opened the house. ‘I’ll come and help.’

‘Cool.’

Sophia was relaxed and at ease, but Isaac’s stomach was now tangled in knots.

Breathe!

In the back garden, she fiddled with the controls of the metal detector, put the headphones on, then started sweeping from side to side at one end of the natural swimming pool.

Standing a few metres away, Isaac dropped what was in his pocket to the ground, took four careful paces to the side, and waited.

Sophia’s gaze was focused on the grass, her brow furrowed slightly as she listened.

Suddenly she stopped and bent over, her fingers separating the stalks.
