‘You sure you’re doing alright?’ he asked.

‘Not really, but I’m a thousand times better now you’re back inside.’

‘Anton says it’s only a category one storm, so we’ll be fine. You ate already?’

‘Yes. Margo made sure I was well fed.’

They lapsed into silence, gazing at each other. Sophia’s pulse was already racing, but when the tips of Isaac’s fingers nudged indecently into the creases between hers, she thought her heart might explode.

Were they going to have sex? Did he want to wait until they were back in Foxbrooke? Did ashram rules still apply here? Did he have a condom?

The questions flew around her head until she was dizzy.

‘Sophia…’

Margo re-entered the kitchen, grabbed two enormous bottles of water, then exited.

As soon as she’d gone, Anton appeared wearing a head torch and carrying a wooden box. He began filling the box with more lanterns.

‘Can we help?’ Sophia asked.

‘No, no,’ he replied. ‘You stay with your man. Everything’s in hand.’

My man…

She sneaked a glance at Isaac. His expression burned bright in the darkness.

Then Margo returned, and he resumed eating with the speed of a man who needed to be somewhere else, doing something far more important.

‘Just leave it on the table when you’re done,’ Margo said to him. ‘Your room has extra lanterns, water and matches. Anything else you need, just ask.’

‘Thank you.’ Isaac placed his cutlery down. ‘You sure we can’t help with anything?’

She shooed them away. ‘We’re fine. Go to bed and ride it out.’

Isaac opened his mouth to speak, but began coughing instead.

‘You want some water?’ Margo asked.

Shaking his head, he took a breath. ‘I’m okay.’

Sophia got to her feet. ‘Thank you, Margo. We’ll go to bed—our room—the room now.’

She cringed at her own nervousness, but Margo hadn’t seemed to notice.

‘Okay, honey. We’ll see you in the morning. Sleep well.’

Isaac stood, gave Margo his thanks, then led Sophia out of the kitchen.

Despite the howling storm, the silence between them felt just as loud as they made their way through the house.

Anxiety gnawed at Sophia’s insides. She’d only ever slept with one man before, and the thought of being intimate with Isaac was as terrifying as it was thrilling. Marcus had been her entire frame of reference when it came to sex, but she knew without a doubt it would be a completely different experience with Isaac.

Would she do it right? Be good enough? Suddenly, she desperately wanted to talk to Estelle, someone overflowing with sexual confidence.

Isaac held the door to their room open, and she entered.

‘Do you want to use the bathroom?’ she asked tentatively.
