Shadow stumbled, releasing her neck and making Amy fall to her knees. She looked over at Sam and the others, only to see their huge eyes before they too were engulfed in the black suit.

Spinning back to the warriors, she saw them charge at Shadow, weapons raised.

Chapter Thirty-Three

The moment he saw Amy’s body covered in the symbiote suit; Cane ran forward. He didn’t care that the courtyard was filled with over twenty Korok soldiers, nor did he care that he was no longer protected by the symbiotes. All he cared about was getting to Amy and getting her somewhere safe. But first, they needed to take care of the threat to their mate’s life.

With his blade extending out of his arm, Cane zeroed his gaze on the tall cyborg he had thought long dead.

Shadow had been responsible for countless deaths in a betrayal so deep, so costly, that it almost defeated the Arusian race.

He and Cole had been sent out to find and kill the traitor. He had thought they had succeeded. From the reports they got on the bunker Shadow had been hiding in, all those inside were dead. After a long investigation of the remains, it was determined that Shadow had perished with the other traitors.

They were wrong. He would not let that mistake happen again.

Shadow raised his mismatching enhanced arms; a rudimentary blade sliding out from the sleeve and braced his feet for a fight.

Before Cane could cut the man down, the Korok soldiers crowded around Shadow, blocking his path to the male.

Cane had no mercy for anyone in his way. He cut them down with a vengeance born of fear, hate and anger.

Spinning in a tight circle, he saw Cole, Iron and Ice making quick work of the Korok’s, but Shadow was gone.

With a loud roar, he glared at the open doorway leading to the rest of the inner fortress. The coward had run, again. He would not get far this time. Cane would not rest until the male was dead. This time, he would be the one to kill him.

He turned when he saw movement out of the corner of his eyes.

Amy ran towards him, the black suit moving off her face, and threw herself into his open arms.

The moment he held her to him, his mind stilled. The madness receded like the morning tide, and his heart began to slow.

“Amy,” he breathed, taking in her scent. He could smell blood on her, making his heart jump. He placed her down on her feet and pulled back enough to look into her eyes.

“Did he hurt you”? His voice still sounded deep and harsh as he spoke, but Amy didn’t seem to care.

She raised her hand to her neck, even as she shook her head.

Cupping her face, Cane lowered until his forehead rested on hers and closed his eyes for a moment. He needed to get his anger under control.

“Cane,” Amy said, making him tear open his eyes, “You came for me.”

A short, dry chuckle escaped him as he met her eyes.

“I told you the first day we met that I would come for you, no matter where you go. I will always come for you, my little Sila.”

The sounds of the others taking care of the last of the Korok barely registered in his mind. All he could see was Amy. She was alive. She was safe.

Cole came over a moment later and Cane released her when his brother yanked her out of his arms and drew her into his big body. She wrapped her arms around his neck, her feet dangling above the floor.

“Are you hurt?” Cole asked.

Again, she shook her head, even as the bruise on her face grew darker in the setting sunlight.

Cane left their mate in the safety of his brother's arms and turned to find three small figures huddled in the corner of the courtyard.

When he approached them, two shot up to their feet, taking a protective stance around the third and raised their arms, ready to defend her.

One of the females hissed when her left arm fell limply to her side, yet her body still stood poised for a fight.
