“Noah,” she gasps.
“I know,” I murmur against her sweaty skin as she comes undone. I flop onto my back and pull at her. She quickly gets to her knees and straddles me. Her soft hands trace lines of desire over my chest as she lowers herself onto me. She takes me in, inch by slow inch, until I am fully inside her. Then she stills, her beautiful face looking down at me with an intensity that leaves me breathless.
“I love you, Noah,” she confesses. My heart clenches in my chest at her words. For a moment, I can’t speak, overcome by the raw sincerity in her eyes.
“I love you too, Mia,” I manage to say. I watch as a beautiful smile curls around the corners of her mouth.
I know it’s fast, but it’s true. I feel like we’ve lived through three lifetimes. We’ve been through hell and come out stronger. I never imagined it was possible to fall in love so totally and completely, and especially not in a matter of days, but it happened. I love her. I am willing to sacrifice my life to save her.
She starts to move, slow and sensual at first, before picking up speed. Her hips roll in rhythm with mine, driving me deeper inside her. The sensation is overwhelming; each thrust bringing me closer to the sweet oblivion of release. I clutch her hips, guiding her movements as we lose ourselves in each other.
Her body moves in perfect sync with mine, a dance of pure desire and love. Every touch, every whisper, and every moan shared between us expresses our feelings for each other.
The tremors start in her body and then sweep through mine. We move faster, harder, until the pleasure peaks. She cries out as she climaxes, trembling violently above me. Her release triggers mine. I empty myself into her, my vision blurring at the edges.
She collapses on top of me, our limbs tangled and hearts pounding. We lay there in silence, catching our breath. Her chest rises and falls against mine, a comforting rhythm that soothes the frantic beats of my heart.
I wrap my arms around her, securing her body against mine. I have zero intention of letting her go. A few minutes later, I feel her breathing slow and know she’s fallen asleep. I smile and kiss the top of her head before letting myself fade once again.
I’m startled awake by a loud knock at the door. My heart races as I toss Mia to the side. My instincts are on high alert. I glance at Mia, who’s still groggy from sleep. “What is it?”
“Someone is here,” I tell her.
Her eyes go wide. I jump out of bed and pull on my jeans before going to the door.
“It’s Agent Fields,” a voice calls from the other side.
I breathe a sigh of relief. Mia and her clothes are gone, and the bathroom door is shut.
I open the door to let Fields and another agent into the room. Their faces are grim, but there’s a flicker of something that looks like relief.
“We’ve got news,” Fields says, his voice steady. “We managed to apprehend one of the guys. He slammed his snowmobile into a tree and was pretty banged up.”
Mia steps out of the bathroom. “What about the others?”
“We’ve got people out looking for the other two. The big boss, though—” Agent Fields pauses, a small smile forming on his lips. “He was stopped in Anchorage at the airport. This was exactly what we needed to lure him out.”
Relief and frustration wash over me simultaneously. “So you used us as bait?”
The agent’s smile fades, replaced by a look of contrition. “I apologize for that. We didn’t have many options, and your situation allowed us to draw him out into the open. But we’ve got him. We cut off the head of the snake.”
“You’re sure?” I ask.
“Positive. We’ve got a plane waiting to take you to Fairbanks. You’ll be safe. You don’t need to testify. We got what we needed from you.”
“Gee, thanks,” I mutter.
Mia’s eyes meet mine, a mix of relief and residual fear. I walk over to her, taking her hand in mine. “We’re getting out of here,” I say softly, more to reassure her than myself.
“What about Carter?” she asks quietly.
“Did you happen to talk to the state police?” I ask Fields.
He shakes his head. “No. Why?”
I quickly tell him about Eric. “I think you owe me one,” I say. “I could have been killed out there. Mia almost died because you were running some play without telling me. You owe me.”
“You’re not going to prison for your role in running drugs,” he replies coolly. “You’ve been paid in full.”
