“What sort of voodoo is this?” he asked, his eyes widening.
Kenny laughed. “Told you.”
He watched as Nico tried each dessert one by one in silent appreciation. Kenny felt something bubbling up inside of him. It was a small feeling of pride for Cleo, which was unusual. He tried to ignore it and continued making his sandwich.
Nico leaned against the counter, shaking his head.
“Get these away from me,” he said, pushing the boxes away.
Kenny laughed.
“You were right about her. She’s good. Really good.”
“Mae is going to be one happy pregnant woman.”
“And you could be one happy man if she was feeding you this on the regular.”
Kenny rolled his eyes.
“No wonder she’s a little, you know, plump. I didn’t know you had a thing for the curvy ones.”
Kenny held up the butter knife he was spreading mayo with and pointed it non-threateningly at Nico. “I don’t have a thing for her. And don’t make fun of her size.”
Nico held his hands up and slowly backed away, letting out a little laugh.
“By the way, some of us are going out tonight. Nothing too crazy.”
“Yeah, maybe.”
Nico walked out of the kitchen and headed to his bedroom. Kenny sat at the counter and started eating his lunch. Maybe it would be good for him to go out tonight. Finding a girl for the night would get Nico off his case about Cleo. It would also be a good distraction for him because all he’d been thinking about since he’d left her house was Cleo.
He thought of her hair pulled back in a messy bun, with frosting stuck in it. The way she tried to fix herself up in the mirror without him knowing. The jeans and T-shirt she wore underneath her apron that showed she didn’t try too hard and didn’t have to. The satisfied smile she had when he tried her desserts.
He let out a sigh. This wasn’t good. He finished his lunch and washed the dishes before heading to his room. He put on a movie and dozed off halfway through. A knock at the door hours later woke him up.
“Yeah?” Kenny called out.
“I’m heading out to meet some of the team for dinner and drinks. Are you coming?” asked Nico as he opened the door, peeking his head in.
“Nah. I think I’m going to stay in tonight.”
“Booo.”
Kenny waved him off. “Have fun.”
Nico shut the door behind him. Kenny heard him grab his keys and the elevator doors ding. He sat up and rubbed his eyes. He checked the time. It was 7 o’clock. He had slept for a long time. He rolled off the bed and went into the bathroom to take a shower to wake himself up. Afterward, he pulled on some sweats and grabbed a cupcake from the kitchen. He devoured it in one bite.
He walked to the living room and plopped down on the couch. He looked around, wondering what to do. It had been a while since he had stayed in and had the place to himself. He pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed his mom. They hadn’t caught up in a bit.
The phone rang two times before he heard her pick up on the other line.
“Kenny! Hi!” she answered warmly.
“Hi, Mom. How are you?”
“I’m good. Just popped dinner in the oven. I’m so happy you called. I caught the games on TV. How are you?”
“Ah, yeah. That was some losing streak, huh?”
