She nodded before moving past him, leading him to the kitchen.
“The samples are just over here,” she said, motioning to the countertop.
“You made all of these?” His eyes widened.
“Mhmm.”
“These all look incredible. You must have been up all night.” Kenny looked from the desserts to her, surprised.
“It’s no biggie.” She shrugged, even though she had been up until three a.m.
She watched as he looked at each of the trays. There were miniature versions of everything they had decided on for the menu, including the red velvet cake and cowboy cookies. She watched his gaze land on the cookies.
“Go ahead. Try one.” She nodded encouragingly.
He carefully picked one up and took a bite. She watched as he closed his eyes and a smile spread across his face.
“These are even better than my mom’s,” he said with disbelief. “But don’t tell her I said that.”
She laughed, and then her eyes fell on the cupcakes sitting on the stovetop. She had forgotten to frost them in the frenzy of cleaning the kitchen.
“Oh, my gosh. I totally forgot to frost the strawberry cupcakes,” she said, walking to the fridge and opening it to search for the frosting.
“No worries. I’m in no rush.”
She smiled to herself as she pulled the bowl out and set it on the counter. She carefully popped out the cupcakes and set them on a plate, then opened a drawer and found a small spatula.
“Make yourself comfortable,” she said, nodding toward the kitchen table.
“Actually, can I watch you work?” Kenny asked, nodding toward the cupcakes.
“Um, sure.”
He nodded and leaned against the counter. His closeness made her breath pick up and she tried to keep her hands from shaking as she carefully frosted the cupcakes. She heard him inhale.
“It’s fresh strawberries,” she said knowingly.
“It smells amazing.”
“Here. Try the frosting.” She held the bowl up.
“Really?”
“Yeah, these are just samples, anyway. Dig in.”
He dipped a finger in the frosting and put it in his mouth. She held her breath, waiting for a response. She watched as his eyes rolled back before closing. He let out a little groan. “Mmmmm.”
Cleo felt a burning desire between her legs as involuntary thoughts entered her head before she quickly pushed them away. What was she thinking?
Kenny opened his eyes and looked at her with appreciation. “What did you put in that?”
She let out a little laugh, picking up the spatula again, and continued frosting the cupcakes. He continued watching her as she finished the last one. She set them carefully on a cupcake stand and stood back to admire her work.
“That’s everything,” she said. She untied the back of her apron and slid it up and over her neck. She hung it on a hook on the wall, and leaned against the counter next to Kenny. He looked at her and smiled.
“Here,” he said as he reached his hand to her face.
She closed her eyes for a moment, wondering what he was doing, but not about to fight it. He took his thumb and gently wiped her cheek before pulling away. The hair on her neck stood up as her eyes fluttered open.
