“Wow. She really went all out. The sprinkles were a surprise to me.”

“She’s good. Really good.” Kenny said in agreement.

“Thank you for finding her. Mae looks so happy.”

“Happy to help.”

Cleo and her assistant began plating the cake and handing it out to the party guests who were eager to get their hands on it. Kenny carefully observed everyone as they dipped their forks into the moist cake and brought it to their mouths. Every single one of them closed their eyes with satisfaction and began murmuring and eyeing Cleo, who had retreated back to the dessert table.

He watched as she and Elle talked quietly but excitedly as they overlooked the party. She was a total hit. The guests began flooding the dessert table and filling their plates with pastries and paying Cleo compliments.

“That was the best cake I have ever tasted.”

“Where can I find your bakery?”

“Are you booked next month? I have a baby shower I need to plan.”

“Do you have to-go boxes?”

He eavesdropped as she answered the questions happily. This was the push she needed. Kenny couldn’t help but feel a small sense of pride in helping her in a small way. He wanted to help her more, and he was financially able to. With his job, there was definitely money to spare. The thought of lending her money as a business loan crossed his mind.

He didn’t know her financial situation or what she made at the bar, but after tonight she would probably need a bigger space than her home kitchen to work out of. He could hire someone to help her find a space to rent, and she could work out of there until she was ready to open the doors as a bakery.

“You look deep in thought,” said Nico, looking at him questioningly.

“Sorry. I’m here.” He lifted his champagne glass and clinked it against Nico’s.

“Cheers to an amazing party for Mae,” said Kenny before taking a sip.

“Cheers!” said Nico enthusiastically.

Kenny pushed the thought of the business loan out of his head. Something about offering Cleo money just didn’t sit right, especially since they no longer talked or had anything to do with each other. Even if he did offer, he doubted she would accept it.

He finished his champagne and he and Nico joined the rest of his team at the bar.

Chad ordered the team a round of drinks and held up his glass. “Cheers to Nico for finding his path in party planning. May he put this much effort into our next game.”

The team laughed as Nico rolled his eyes. They clinked their glasses. Kenny couldn’t help but notice Kev looking in Cleo’s direction. He wasn’t discreet about it as he leaned up against the bar sipping his drink and staring. It looked like he had some dark thoughts passing through his mind, which made Kenny uncomfortable.

Feeling protective, he stepped in front of Kev.

“What’s so interesting?” asked Kenny, blocking his view.

“I’m just looking. That baker girl has a lot to look at.” Kev peered past Kenny’s shoulder, and Kenny swiftly stepped in front of him again.

“What the hell is your problem?” asked Kev, raising his voice.

“I just don’t want you making anyone uncomfortable, especially the staff.”

“Since when do you care about the staff? Or is it just someone in particular?” Kev stepped closer to Kenny as if challenging him.

Nico stepped between them. “Boys, boys, boys. We’re at a party. For my sister. Let’s not get into it here.”

Kenny stood his ground, staring coldly at Kev, who took an unsure step back. He finished his drink and slunk away into the crowd. As he watched Kev disappear into the crowd in the opposite direction of the dessert table, Kenny felt like he could relax. That guy was such a creep. He didn’t want him anywhere near Cleo.

“What was that about?” asked Nico.

“Nothing. Kev is just a total creep.”
