“That guy is bad news, Bridget,” one of the men said, shaking his head.
“I don’t usually see him in here by himself. He’s usually with the team,” she said thoughtfully.
“Well, he’s gone now,” said Cleo, not wanting to make a big deal of it. She smiled at a group of customers who had just walked in. Bridget walked over to greet them, leaving Cleo to catch her breath after that threatening exchange.
She wondered if Kenny knew how much of a creep his teammate was. They seemed to be together a lot, which was strange because Kenny was such a nice guy. Kev didn’t seem to be someone he would likely be friends with. Maybe it was just because they were on the same team. She started to dread the possibility of them coming in this weekend. As much as she wanted to see Kenny, the thought of Kev being anywhere near her creeped her out.
Maybe he had gotten the hint. If not, at least Bridget would look out for her, and a few of the regulars here. They were like a family and Cleo was thankful for them. She felt her phone vibrate in her back pocket. She pulled it out and glanced quickly at the notification lighting up the screen. It was Kenny. Surprised, she opened the text:
I thought you’d like to know I survived practice. ?
She smiled down at her phone. Maybe this wasn’t just business. She typed a quick reply:
I’m so glad to hear you made it through!
Maybe the smiley face wasn’t too much after all.
Chapter 12
Kenny
Kenny ran into the locker room and threw his gear in his locker quickly before heading to the showers. He wanted to beat the rest of the team and get in a hot shower before they rushed in. He washed off the sweat and the red dirt from the long practice. As he shut the water off, he heard the rest of the team walking in. He grabbed a towel and dried off before wrapping it around his waist and walking over to his locker.
“Got some place to be?” asked Chad, looking amused as he threw his gear down.
“Yeah, you rushed off the field,” said Nico, sitting on the bench and taking off his shoes.
“Just ready to get home,” said Kenny as he rummaged through his duffel bag for clean clothes.
“What? You’re not coming out for happy hour?” asked Chad disappointedly.
“Neither of us are,” said Nico.
“Wait, what?” Chad looked between the two of them.
“We have to finalize a few things for Mae’s party,” said Nico.
“With the baker girl?” asked Chad, wiggling his eyebrows at Kenny.
Kenny ignored him and slid on a pair of sweats and pulled on his team hoodie.
“Yeah. She’s bringing over the final menu to try out. She’s really good. Wait until you try it.” Nico headed toward the showers.
“I’m sure she is. Have you tried any of her goods, Kenny?” Chad smirked.
Kenny rolled his eyes.
“Wait, are you talking about that bartender girl?” asked Kev, joining the conversation.
“Yeah, why?” asked Kenny, eyeing him uncertainly.
“She seems like a real bitch.”
“Excuse me?” Kenny could feel himself getting defensive, but tried to swallow his irritation down.
“Yeah, the other night I went into the bar and had a drink. Or two.”
“And?”
