“What happened to your high horse about vampires being monsters?” he demands.

I feel a pang of guilt and shame wash over me. “I’m sorry. I messed up.”

He is incredulous. “Of all of them, you had to fall for a Black. This has to be a joke.”

My blood runs cold at his words, and a knot forms in the pit of my stomach. “What did you say?”

He must see the shock on my face because his expression softens slightly. “You didn’t know,” he realizes, his tone more sympathetic now.

I shake my head, feeling sick to my stomach with dread. “Know what?”

He takes a deep breath before delivering the blow. “Selene… Miss Black. “She’s from the Black coven—the same coven her father belonged to—the same man who had a vendetta against Dad and almost killed Mom for it.

The world around me seems to spin as the pieces fall into place. Selene’s cryptic words about her family’s death, her connection to my own painful past—it all makes sense now. And I had just kissed her, oblivious to the truth.

“You knew?” I ask him.

“Of course I knew Liam. I was keeping an eye on her, and although I know she is one of the good ones and that she was not involved in the attacks, she is still a vampire. She still has Black as her last name,” Gray says, running a hand through his hair.

And I’m supposed to mated to her?

I feel bile rise in my throat, and I swallow hard, pushing it down. “I... I need a moment,” I manage to choke out.

Gray nods in understanding, his expression sympathetic. “Take all the time you need, Liam,” he says, placing a hand on my shoulder.

As Gray leaves me alone with my thoughts, I feel a sense of profound regret and despair. How could I have been so blind? And what does this mean for my feelings for Selene? Everything feels like it’s falling apart, and I’m not sure how to pick up the pieces.

Chapter 28

Selene

After that kiss, I practically race home. My mind keeps flashing back to every moment we shared like a movie reel, and I can’t seem to shake the memory of his lips on mine.

But as I pull up to my apartment building, my reverie is shattered by Katya’s unexpected appearance. I roll down my window to greet her, but her words freeze me in place.

“We took care of your little problem,” she says casually.

My heart drops to my stomach as I realize what she means—the wolves, Liam’s warning. It all clicks into place, and suddenly, I feel sick.

“What... what do you mean?” I manage to stammer.

Katya shrugs indifferently. “The wolves. They won’t be bothering you anymore.”

My hands start to tremble, and a wave of nausea washes over me. “I never wanted you to... to kill anyone,” I protest weakly.

Katya’s expression darkens, hurt flashing in her eyes. “Well, it’s too late for that now,” she retorts. “Looks like you’re on your own.”

With that, she turns and walks away, leaving me feeling more alone than ever. I stumble into my apartment, full of guilt and fear.

I pace back and forth, unable to sit still as Katya’s words settle over me like a suffocating blanket. She was responsible for four deaths now… because of me.

Just as I’m about to collapse onto my couch, there’s a knock at the door. My heart leaps into my throat, and I freeze in place, my pulse pounding in my ears.

With trembling hands, I approach the door and peek through the peephole. It’s Liam.

I hesitate for a moment, but then I realize I can’t keep avoiding him. I need to face whatever consequences come my way.

With a deep breath, I unlock the door and swing it open. “Liam? What are you doing here?”
