The house was a mess, and I could tell something bad had happened.
I wanted to remind her of her promise to take me to the park, but she looked tired and hurt. I was confused and very afraid.
And then my father had come home with Jade and told me that everything was going to be okay. The bad people were gone, and that Jade was moving in with us.
It had all turned out alright, but I found out later that the night had been horrific for my whole family. If Mariya had not cast a protection spell, we would have all been murdered.
She had saved all our lives, and she had risked her own in the process.
In the end, Dad and Jade (with Mariya’s help) defeated the vampires and evil council members who had been involved in the attack. All we had to live with were thoughts of what almost happened.
Soon after, Jade became head of the council, and she and Dad got married and had my sister and brothers.
But me. I had lived through a vampire attack at four years old, and although I slept through most of it, I remembered the fear and relief on the faces of my family. Not to mention the child’s view of surviving something awful.
And now, vampires were back in town.
A shudder runs through me. This time, we don’t have Mariya to look out for us.
This time, it's all on me.
Chapter 5
Selene
Iam sore.
Everything hurts.
I should have healed by now, but because I haven't been feeding, all of my vampire abilities have slowed down. My entire being is fueled by consuming human blood, and when I gave that up for squirrels and rabbits, I also gave up many of my supernatural powers.
I gave up my strength, my strong senses, and my ability to heal almost immediately after injury.
My healing has slowed to less than half my usual levels. Without even the animal blood, I was healing like a human, which was bad.
When Annie had come in from her shift, she had been so worried to see me all bloodied and bruised.
“What the hell happened to you, and why didn’t you call me?”
Annie was a trauma nurse in the local hospital, so she could obviously tell that I had been hurt. That dumb robbery story was all my muddled brain could come up with.
Everything I had been building in this town, my new life, it was all coming down around me.
Maybe this was the sign I needed to leave once and for all. I thought that coming back here would help keep me safe from my family, but I had not counted on the werewolves’ murderous threats.
No one had come back after my parents died over twenty years ago.
I didn’t think anyone would recognize me. Let alone know about me.
I guess I was wrong.
The door creaks open, and Annie slips in. “Okay, sorry about that. I was talking to the attending doctor. She is going to see you in a little bit.”
Then she takes my hand in hers, “God, you are so cold. I am so sorry this happened to you!”
Damn it! This injury has me messed up. Usually, I use all my energy and food to create the façade of an actual human being, which means I have a heartbeat and a pulse and body heat that I control.
I do everything I can to pass as a human.
