“I wanna talk to you.”
“What do you want to talk about? How are things with your folks?”
“I’d rather talk about what happened with you and your girl.”
His head shook as he released a hard sigh. “That’s not my girl. I don’t know what’s gotten into Robin lately, but she’s not the woman I grew up with.” Dejvi paused. “She threatened to sue me if I didn’t give her a baby.”
“What?” I shrieked, sitting up to look down at him. “Can she even do that?”
“I don’t know. Technically, we did make a contract, but I don’t think that’s something a judge will actually try to make me uphold.”
Chuckling, I lay back down on his chest. “Her ass been reading too many books. There’s no way she can make you do that. I don’t care what you signed.”
“I don’t want this to be the reason I lose you, love. I don’t want to lose you at all.”
I wanted to tell him that he wouldn’t, but instead, I said, “I don’t want to lose you either.”
The lights flickered before going out completely. That was how I knew I fell asleep quickly because I hadn’t even cut them off before my nap. Now that the power had gone out, I wouldn’t have to.
“Shit. Hopefully the power won’t be out for too long. I’m sure you got a fridge full of food,” Dejvi said, making me laugh.
“I do. It usually comes on after three or four hours, thankfully.”
“I’ll open these windows to get some air circulating,” he offered.
“I’ll get some candles and light them.”
As we shuffled around my room, a comfortable smile rested on my face. This wasn’t how I thought I’d end the day, but I loved ending it like this with him. Once we had the windows open and candles lit, he used that light plus the flashlights on our phones to roll a couple of blunts. We got in bed and smoked them, deciding to watch a movie on his phone.
I wasn’t sure what possessed us to think we could watch a scary movie while we were high, but it was funny more than anything.
“Oh shit!” I yelled, probably louder than I had to as I pointed at the phone screen. “Did you s-see that?”
Dejvi sputtered a laugh as his eyes widened. “I can’t see shit on this little ass screen. I’m just listening for the sounds.”
We fell into another fit of laughter that reminded me that my throat was excruciatingly dry. I stumbled down the hall and grabbed us some water before tumbling back into bed. After we chugged it down, Dejvi pulled me close. We started kissing, which led to his lips lowering to my neck and nipples. When he burped, I almost died laughing.
“Did you get some milk out of there?” I teased, and he laughed so hard he choked.
“Yo, you crazy as hell, girl.”
“You love it though.”
“I do. I love you.”
My smile slowly wavered. Even with me being high, I was coherent enough to understand what he’d just said. Looking over at him, I fell in love with the sight of his handsome face shining through the darkness because of the candlelight.
“You do?”
Pulling me close, Dejvi placed a soft, tender kiss to my lips. “Yeah. I love you.”
My smile was so wide it made my cheeks hurt. “I love you too.”
Regardless of how I tried to deny it and slow things down, I really did love this man. I fell in love with him when he fed me and made sure my spirit was good on the worst night of my life. Not because of a rebound, but because in that darkness, Dejvi was my light.
“Then will you be mine?” he asked quietly.
“Yes, Dejvi. I’ll be yours.”
