"It's only lust," I mutter to myself as I start to wonder if love at first sight is actually real. "It's lust, Max," I repeat. "Trust me, there is no such thing as love at first sight."

Chapter Sixteen

Lila

"Hey, Skye. What are you up to this evening?" I ask my new friend as we make our way to the elevator at the end of the day. I’m glad to be leaving the office.

"Not much," she says, shaking her head. "I think I’m going to go and have a drink. Do you want to join me?"

"I would, but I'm going to do some reconnaissance work tonight."

"Reconnaissance work?" She looks at me in surprise. "What are you talking about?"

"So…" I lower my voice and look around to ensure no one's listening to me. "Max has this new case where he is helping a client, a very rich client, file for divorce. Problem is, there's a prenuptial agreement in place that states if she cheats, he doesn't have to pay her anything, and she cheated and there's photographic proof of her cheating."

"What's the problem then?" Skye looks confused as we step inside the elevator.

"Well, he's nervous that the wife is going to go to the press, which I don't even know why she would, but anyway, he wants her to accept a hundred thousand dollars as a settlement."

"I'd accept a hundred thousand dollars,” she says. "That's a lot of money."

"He's worth millions of dollars. Hundreds of millions, actually."

"Oh, okay. But I still don't get it. If there's a prenup…"

"Exactly." I stare her in the eyes.

"Why is he so worried? Why is this such a big deal? It seems to me there's more to the story." She looks at me. "So what are you going to do?"

"I need to try and find her and figure out what the real story is."

"You are going to do what?" she says as we get out of the elevator and walk toward the lobby.

"I want to try and meet her and figure out the real story and then try and persuade Max to do the right thing."

She giggles. "Are you crazy, Lila?"

"What?" I am slightly taken aback by her question. "I just don't like the client. I haven’t said his name because privacy or something, but I think it's okay with you. We both work at the same law firm, right?"

"True."

"Well, his name is Jack Whittington."

"No way. Not the Jack Whittington of Jack’s Shacks."

"Yeah, him. I met him and he's such a jerk off and I just feel like he's trying to screw his wife."

"Okay, and she looks like a sweet, innocent woman?”

"No," I say, shaking my head. "I saw some pictures of her and her social media is all her in bikinis. But I want to give her the benefit of the doubt because he was just so creepy."

"And you think you're going to find out something that's going to make Max not do what his client wants?" she asks with an eyebrow raised.

"I don't know, but I'm hopeful," I admit. "I mean, I just want to see if my hunch is correct."

"Okay, so then what's the plan?"

"So, I was looking on her social media and it looked like she goes to a spin class tonight, and after that, they all head out to a smoothie shop next door. I figure if I go to the spin class, I might get an invite to the smoothie shop and then I can speak to her. You want to come?"
