“Tell me which one you’re looking at first. I saw that look on your face.”
“The blonde. Iris. Pregnant and needing protection.”
“That’s interesting.” He turned his phone to face me. On his screen was a selfie of her in what looked like a ratty house or apartment. Chipped paint. Broken baseboards. A window with duct tape along a crack. I paid attention to details. Kind of my job.
“She’s pregnant with another man’s baby,” I said, testing the waters. I didn’t mind that she already had a baby on the way, and my dragon certainly didn’t. He dug his claws in, demanding to go find the woman—right that second.
“She’s beautiful, and look at that smile. My beast isn’t saying anything about the pregnancy, Nix. He wants her. Damn, I haven’t felt a pull to a female since…since before. I don’t even remember it being that strong with her. It’s a picture on a screen. Can this be real, or are we just that fucking horny?”
I snorted. We were horny. We’d had several honeymoon weeks with Rachel, mating and only coming up for air and food, but since then, we’d been celibate. What was the point if a female wasn’t our mate?
“She’s younger.”
He nodded. “Only by a few years. Tell me you don’t want to go protect her from anything on this earth that would cause her harm.”
I glanced back at the pictures she’d submitted. “I can’t. The beast wants to protect her and bring her to our lair.”
Keir blew out a long breath and crossed his arms over his bare chest. “What do we do now?”
I was one step ahead of him. “We can send her a message. See if she’s interested.”
He nodded. “Both of us?”
“I can send a message for us both,” I added.
“Do it.” Keir slapped his hands on the table before picking up our plates. “One way to find out.”
While I messaged her, Keir rinsed and loaded the dishes. If I wasn’t mistaken, I heard him whisper the name Iris before saying he was going to take a shower.
I sent the message then a prayer to Fate. One more smile on us was all it would take.
Chapter Six
Iris
“I need a break. Please. Right now,” I told Bessie, bouncing on my heels. I was excited yes, but the main emotion spiraling through me was relief. The notification on the app could be just the break I needed.
“Good thing I like you. Go on.” Bessie cackled as I found a stool and dragged it out the back door.
I sat in the sun and took a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves before checking the app. The notification could be anything. Someone checked my profile, or I might have a match. Hell, for all I knew the app could be letting me know that a pregnant woman seeking two dragon mates to take her and her unborn child in and protect them was out of the question and out of the scope of what they offered.
My needs were great.
My hand pressed to my stomach when I clicked on the alert. I had a match. A match I didn’t expect. Maybe a wave or a wink, but a match?
Holy shit. They’d even sent me a message.
They.
As in two dragons.
Kicking my feet at the prospect, I let out a little squeal while looking at their profile pictures. They were more than handsome. They were gorgeous. Keir had brown hair, longer on the top and faded on the sides. His eyes were a deep green. Strong jaw. Boulders for shoulders.
And the other male’s name was Phoenix but he signed the message with Nix. Nix and Keir. Strong names for dragons. Nix had a short mohawk, no spikes or overuse of gel. Just a tuft of hair longer than the rest. He was thinner than Keir but not by a lot. Neither of them had missed a meal, but I’d learned that most shifters didn’t. Nix had a warm smile and beckoning wheat-colored eyes.
Hello, Iris.
The app showed us as a match. Your pictures are beautiful, and we understand the delicate nature of your predicament. We hope to hear back from you either on the app or via video chat if you like.
