Scarlett sent her a little smile over her shoulder.
Jess smirked and tossed her hair back.
Some interesting dynamics going on here, Meadow observed. She had no clue what the source could be, but she hoped things wouldn’t get awkward or messy. For better or worse, she was stuck with these women for the next four and a half days. After the crazy stunt Logan had pulled—argh!—she’d seriously considered backing out of the trip. But she couldn’t bring herself to disappoint him, and now that she was here, she just wanted to relax and have a good time with no drama.
Twirling a curly lock of hair around her manicured finger, Jess grinned at Meadow. “How old are you?”
“Twenty-four,” she answered.
“Oh, cool,” Scarlett said from the passenger seat. “We’re the same age.”
Jess pointed at herself. “I’m twenty-six, Nadia’s twenty-five and Bianca is…How old are you again?”
“Twenty-seven,” Bianca replied.
“That’s right. You’re two years older than Nelson.” Jess grinned. “Cougar!”
“Rawr,” Bianca growled with a lecherous gleam in her eyes.
Laughter rang through the SUV.
On the way to the hotel, they blasted Cardi B on the stereo while excitedly taking in the sights and sounds of Sin City. It amused Meadow to see her famous hometown through other people’s eyes. She wondered if Logan felt the same.
Bianca smiled at her. “What did your dad say when you told him you were coming back home?”
“I haven’t told him yet. He had to go out of town for work this week, so I’m planning to show up on his doorstep on Saturday and surprise him.”
“Aww,” the others cooed warmly. “He’s gonna be so happy!”
“I know.” Meadow smiled.
Bianca gave her a teasing grin. “You know who ain’t too happy with you right now?”
“Who?”
“Ana. She says Logan gave her sister the brush-off and broke her heart.”
“Oh.” Meadow dropped her eyes to her lap, fidgeting with the silver charm bracelet they’d given her at the adoption center. “I’m sorry.”
Jess snorted. “Girl, what are you apologizing for? It’s not your fault that man doesn’t want anybody but you!”
Bianca laughed. “Jess is right. All’s fair in love and war.” She gave Meadow a twinkling smile. “Ana doesn’t blame you at all. She says she could tell by the way you talked about Logan that there were feelings involved, and she would never want her sister to be any man’s afterthought or consolation prize.”
Meadow didn’t know what to say. “Um, well, I, uh…”
Nadia met her gaze in the rearview mirror and smiled sympathetically, then cranked up the music to discourage any further conversation. When Meadow flashed her a grateful smile, Nadia winked.
Everyone sang and bopped along to the music as they cruised down the busy Strip, passing famous luxury hotels and glitzy restaurants. Professional hockey teams traveled on private jets and enjoyed five-star accommodations when they were on the road. So it was no surprise that the Rebels were staying at the Bellagio, one of the most opulent hotels on the Strip.
When the girls arrived at the Bellagio, they valet parked and headed inside wheeling their luggage. The super posh lobby was bustling with guests arriving and departing. A spectacular chandelier made of colorful glass flowers dramatically adorned the ceiling.
As they started across the lobby, they were intercepted by a gorgeous thirtysomething blonde decked out in expensive designer clothes, her hair and makeup done to perfection.
After hugs and kisses had been exchanged, Nadia introduced Meadow to the blonde. Her name was Jenna Vasiliev and she was married to the team’s goaltender. With her sexy hourglass figure, she looked more like an adult film star than the mother of two young children. And she was rocking five-inch stiletto Louboutins that made Meadow feel slovenly in her ripped jeans and ballet flats.
All her insecurities dissolved when Jenna stepped right into her space and wrapped her up in a big, warm hug. “You must be Logan’s Meadow. It is such a pleasure to meet you!”
Meadow smiled into the blonde’s perfumed hair. “Nice to meet you, too.”
