Chapter 16
“Home sweet home.” Aaron opened the door of the apartment for me and proceeded in after, closing it behind us.
It felt good to be home. The couple of days of consciousness in the hospital had been more than enough for me. The bed was way too hard for my liking, but most importantly, laying there wasn’t helping me get my memory back. If anything, I was becoming more confused.
Taking my purse from me, Aaron hung it on the hooks next to my police gear and slipped an arm around my waist escorting me over to the sofa. “You’re looking a little wobbly, maybe you’d better take a load off.”
He was right, I was feeling a slight amount of vertigo, but wanting to make it on my own, I shrugged his arm away. “Thank you, but I can do this on my own.” Seeing a look of hurt on his features, I smiled, leaning in to kiss him. “How am I going to get better and be able to support myself when you’re at work if I don’t try doing this on my own?”
He looked unconvinced, but ultimately relented and allowed me to slowly and carefully make my way to the sofa and plunk myself down onto it. A loud, whiny meow came from behind the sofa moments before Buster jumped up from behind and down onto my lap. “Hey Buster.” Smiling, I picked the cat up and cuddled him tight. This was what I needed, I needed my cat and my home. Buster felt normal and comforting. Buster was what I knew for certain was real.
“Are you hungry?” Aaron went to the kitchen and began opening the cupboards and fridge, searching for food. “I can whip us up something.”
I wasn’t. Not really, but it wouldn’t hurt to get some nourishment in me. “Okay, something light would be great.”
He continued to clumsily search the kitchen. Finally, he sighed throwing his hands up in the air in defeat. “Looks like we’re a little short on food. How can you not have any food and only beer in the house? How about I order in?”
I shrugged. I couldn’t seem to remember the past year; the status of my kitchen was the least of my concerns. “That’s fine.”
He began to scroll through restaurants on his phone. “What do you want?”
“I really don’t care. Whatever I normally like to get.” If I thought long enough, I was confident that I’d remember what I liked in the area, I’d lived here for years, but I wasn’t interested in straining myself tonight. My energy was focused on figuring out why being with Aaron didn’t feel right. Once I figured that out, I suspected it all would fall into place.
“I’ll order us Chinese.”
“Fine.” Sinking back into the sofa, I sighed.
“By the way, your mom is almost in the city, she’ll be here tomorrow.”
I immediately perked up. Good, my mother. She’d have the answers. It had been so long since I’d seen her. At least I think it had been a long time. I should have gone home at least a couple of times a year, it’s not like Seattle was another planet.
“How is Dylan doing?”
Aaron shrugged. “He’s in jail waiting to see a judge in a couple days.”
This didn’t feel right. “Maybe I’ll go to the station and go see him tomorrow. We can get this sorted out.” Sitting up straighter, I looked around. “Have you seen my phone?”
Aaron shook his head. “No, I’ll take a look around for you. Maybe you lost it?”
“When did I have it last?”
Aaron stared at me from the kitchen for a long minute. “I’m not sure. I think I saw you with it the other day.”
I looked around and noticed the empty charger on the end table next to me. “Why don’t you call it and see if it rings?”
He looked hesitant and then nodded. “Good plan.” Making his way into the living room, he brought up my name from his directory and pressed the call button. The call went immediately to voice mail.
Dammit!
“Look, you just got out of the hospital and maybe you should just relax. Whatever it is that you’re planning you can do it tomorrow when you get your energy back.”

Dylan
Everything about this was bullshit. As soon as I was out of this cell, I was going to kill that bastard Aaron. Okay, maybe not kill, but I’d make this right. Maya was home with him, sleeping in our bed, not even realizing she wanted to be with me.
