She chewed at her lower lip a moment. “Okay, not to burst your bubble, but did they say they will, or they might? Is it definite that you’ll get the call back?”
“Trust me baby, they loved me. I can tell. I got something I can just feel it and I’m pretty sure it’s the co-star spot. They said they wanted a fresh face since the star of the show is well-known. Before you ask, I don’t know who it’s going to be yet. Rumors are the person is a big deal. So they are looking to surround him with new up-and-coming talent.”
The grin that spread across her lips was larger than I’d ever seen her smile before, sheer happiness glistening in her eyes. “I’m so happy for you. I don’t have words.” She was silent a moment before doing a little hop. “Champagne! We need to celebrate!”
“Well, I haven’t gotten it yet.” Her excitement while intoxicating was making me feel the pressure of having to get the role. I didn’t want to let her down. I was confident that they wanted me, but seeing how happy she was for me, I knew that come hell or high water I needed to secure that part now. If not for me then for her.
Pulling a bottle from her wine rack in the fridge, she grabbed two champagne glasses and popped the cork giggling as a small amount of the champagne overflowed from the bottle and splatted onto the floor. Pouring two glasses, she placed the bottle on the counter and passed me a glass.
“I’d like to make a toast.”
Grinning, I nodded. “I’d love to hear your toast.”
“To my annoying stepbrother, turned boyfriend, Dylan.”
I gave her a look of distaste, preferring to not have the fact that we were once stepsiblings brought into this moment, but allowed her to finish.
“May you get this part and become the biggest celebrity in Hollywood so I can have every woman in America jealous that I was the one who scored you.” She clinked her glass against mine. “Cheers.”
“Classy.”
“I think so.” She laughed before taking a long drink.
And just like that the douche ex-boyfriend was nothing but a bad memory the rest of the night.

Chapter 13
~ New Year’s Eve ~
Dylan
“Five… Four… Three… Two… One… Happy New Year!” We shouted along with the crowd at Times Square as we watched the glimmering ball drop. Sliding my arm around Maya’s waist, I pulled her up and into my arms. She immediately wrapped her legs around my waist and slid her arms over my shoulder as she looked down at me laughing with a gleam in her eyes so endearing that it tugged at my heartstrings. This was the first time since I’d arrived here a week ago that I’d seen her completely carefree aside from in the bedroom.
“Happy New Year!” Sliding my free hand to the back of her head, I urged her mouth down to mine. As our lips connected and she pressed her body tight to mine, I immediately felt a jolt, both in my heart and in my dick. It was only a week – a week and I was falling hard for this woman. It didn’t even seem possible in such a short period of time, but it was happening. Though we had a past together, it had been a long time ago, but it felt like those years had washed away and we were as close as we’d ever been back then, but this time there were no barriers to come between us. I wasn’t the ignorant, selfish young man I once was, and I was more than willing to be the man she wanted and needed me to be now.
“Happy New Year,” she gasped smiling down at me, keeping her legs tightly wrapped around me. “It’s a new year and a fresh start on life.”
“It is,” I agreed, moving my hands again so they were both grabbing her ass, helping to support her weight on my hips, I wasn’t ready to let her go yet. “Which brings me to something I’d like to talk to you about.”
The grin slowly faded from her lips, and she loosened her leg’s grip around my waist, slowly sliding down my body.
“No, no… I’m not sure what’s going through that beautiful little head of yours, but whatever it is, back it up. You haven’t even heard my proposal.”
“How do you know what I’m thinking?” She pulled her knit hat lower onto her forehead until it covered her eyebrows.
“Because I think we have something very special. And your smile faded way too quickly.” Reaching out to her, I ran the back of my gloved hand down her cold, rosy cheek.
She closed her eyes and seemed to bask in my touch for a moment before backing away. “Then, what’s on your mind?”
“Let’s get out of the chaos so we can talk.” Taking her hand, I led her through the maze of drunk and exuberant people. It was midnight and below freezing temperatures but there were toddlers and babies out with their parents in full celebration. This place and the energy were infectious. I hated to leave, but what I wanted to talk about had been on my mind all day. I just needed to put in the open.
“What are you thinking?” She asked again when we broke through the crowd and emerged at a less trafficked area. There were still tons of people around, but the loudness of celebration was behind us.
“I’m thinking that I can’t believe it took me so long to move here.”
She gave me a curious glance.
