Chapter 18

Lola

I’d begged, plead, and even attempted to seduce my two men into changing their minds to exchange Gabriella for the person who framed Lily, but it was a no-go; they were going to do what they were going to do whether I liked it or not. Admittedly, it really wasn’t their call either.

“It’s really fucking freaky isn’t it?” Leaning over the coffee table to get a better look, Talon looked from me sitting on the sofa to Gabriella who was sitting next to me, her wrists and ankles bound, and back again. I wasn’t sure who he was talking to so no one answered.

“We’re twins, not a sideshow act Talon,” I snapped. “You’ve seen twins before, haven’t you?”

“Ohh ouch,” Gabriella chimed in, “You gonna take that Mr. President?”

The room went completely silent as all eyes shifted to Talon, awaiting his response to my insolence. Talon’s gaze locked onto mine, his expression unreadable. I was able to talk to Ash and Phoenix like that without repercussions. Maybe I’d overstepped with Talon. Chewing at my lower lip, I waited for his response.

“You know. I’m in a good mood. I’ll let that pass. But don’t think you’re a guest here. Until I decide what I’m going to do with you, you’re still collateral.”

“Come on Talon, baby. Let’s just get this shit over with.” Gabriella stood and jerked her chin toward the doorway. “Raven isn’t a patient man.”

“Hey boss, we’re set to roll.” Cisco announced entering the cabin.

My little sparring with Talon quickly left my mind and I looked at Ash and Phoenix. They were leaving, and if Gabriella were to be believed then there’s a chance someone could get hurt… or worse. My sister wasn’t the only one who could be at risk. The guys had tried over and over to convince me that she wasn’t a good person and couldn’t be trusted any more than Raven, but I couldn’t believe she was all bad – I wouldn’t.

The men were armed to the hilt, with handguns in holsters at their sides and heavier artillery inside both the van and the trucks that would be leading and following the van. I’d never seen so many weapons. But it wasn’t until I watched them strap on bullet-proof vests that the fact that there was a chance that one of my men may not come back alive hit home.

“I’m going,” I declared, standing. “Do you have a vest for me and Gabriella?”

“To hell you are,” Ash shot back.

“You can’t tell me what to do.”

“May not be able to tell you, but I can sure as hell make you.” Ash crossed the room to me in several long strides. Before I knew what was happening I was being flung over his shoulder and being taken back to the room they’d held me captive in for a week.

“Put me down, Ash. Right this instant!” I squirmed on his shoulder, hoping he’d put me down but to no avail. He didn’t release me until we were in the room. Tossing me onto the bed, he spun and headed for the door.

But I was too quick for him. One bounce on the hard mattress and I was back up on my feet and across the room in record speed, running past him and back into the living room.

“For fuck’s sakes, Lola,” he growled, coming up behind me and scooping me up with one powerful arm around my waist as though I were a naughty child. “You’re not going!”

“Stop!” Talon yelled so loud and with such force that the entire room, which now contained eight of us, froze – chatter coming to a halt. “We don’t have time for this. She’s going. If she wants to get herself killed then I won’t have the worry of figuring out what to do with her once this is all done and over with.”

Good, at least Talon was on board. They wouldn’t dare challenge the boss.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Talon,” Phoenix said giving me a warning look.

Ignoring the look he was giving me, I said, “Is there an extra vest for me? If not that’s fine, I won’t leave the van.”

“Phoenix give her a vest.” Talon turned to Cisco “And get Gabriella into the van. If she causes an issue put some tape over her mouth.”

“I don’t need that brute to take me anywhere, I can get to the van myself.” Standing, Gabriella began to bunny hop across the room. Everyone in the room watched her hopping along, not sure if they dared laugh, though several chuckles echoed through the room. “Someone cutting the tape from my legs would have made this easier.”

As she passed by him Cisco cracked a full chuckle.

Stopping at the doorway, Gabriella turned to Cisco and gave him a look over. “I know you – don’t I?” His gaze turned stormy, but before he could confirm she added with a cocky grin. “Yeah, I do. How’s that shoulder doing? My aim has gotten better since last time we met.”

His hand lashed out and grasped her throat, lifting her ever so slightly off the ground, though she wouldn’t give him the benefit of squirming in his grasp. “You’re fucking lucky we need you.” The hatred was so intense in his deep growly tone that it made me cringe. My sister, on the other hand, didn’t even flinch. What in the hell had she endured in her lifetime that being at the mercy of someone who wanted to kill you didn’t even faze her?

“Let her go!” Talon growled, fire gleaming in his eyes. “We fucking need her alive. What the fuck is wrong with the bunch of you? We have a lot riding on this. For fuck’s sakes.”

Several men mumbled their apologies and things seemed to get organized with lightning speed and efficiency after that. Within ten minutes we were on the road. Gabriella and I were in the van, blindfolded and hands secured, with Ash in the back with us, keeping watch. Phoenix drove the lead truck while Talon drove the van and Cisco driving the trailing truck. All in all Talon had myself, Gabriella and nine other men scattered throughout the cars.
