Chapter 15

Phoenix

It was so dark out outside tonight that the duo outside was nearly to the door before I recognized them. Talon and Cisco. I released the breath I’d been holding. “It’s Talon. What in the fuck?” Relaxing, I stuffed the gun in the back of the waistband of my pants, unlocked the door to the cabin and opened it up as Talon and Cisco reached the porch.

He hadn’t even reached the entranceway when Talon started speaking. “Good. You two are up.”

Walking into the cabin he started to speak again and then gave Ash an up-and-down look. “Would you mind getting some fucking pants on.”

Looking at Ash in his red boxer briefs, a grin spread across my lips. “Yeah man. Enough with the showmanship already.”

Ash rolled his eyes and then looked at me directly. “You can just go fuck yourself. I’ll be back.”

“What’s going on?”

A rare wide grin spread across Talon’s lips. “You won’t believe what we have sleeping in the back of the van.”

There were several people that he’d have liked to have hogtied in the back of the van so I shrugged. I didn’t want to get my hopes up that it was Raven’s old lady.

“We found Gabriella. This is the only safe place to bring her until the trade.”

“So I’m babysitting two now?” I asked with a chuckle.

“I’m afraid so. But that’s not the only surprise.” He nodded at Cisco. “Go get sleeping beauty and bring her in.”

“Right away brother.” The large man spun and went back to the van.

“Oh, and that’s not all.” He brushed past me and into the cabin. There was an excitement in his eyes that I hadn’t seen in a long time. He reminded me of a kid who’d just gotten the birthday present of his life. “There will be quite the surprise when you see Gabriella.”

“Surprise?” Ash asked, reappearing fully dressed including holster and vest. He frowned and then looked at me.

I gave him a shrug, mouthing, I don’t know.

“And here she is,” Cisco announced, carrying a dark-haired woman over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes. The woman draped over his shoulder made a little groan noise. “Someone might want to get some rope and duct tape. She’s a feisty one and starting to come out of it. The last thing we want is her escaping after all she’s put us though.”

“Yeah, on it.” Ash took off down the hallway. There was a closet down the hall that we used to keep rope, tools, and so on.

“Where’d you find her?” I asked as Talon plunked himself down on the armchair. I remained standing by the door as I watched him. I couldn’t keep from smiling, his excitement was contagious.

“We got a tip that she has a boyfriend.” His cat-that-ate-the-canary grin widened. “We found her there, with the boyfriend.”

“Wow.” Rubbing at my beard, I gave it some thought. “Guess that means she and her old man are done.”

“Didn’t seem done to me. He seems to want her back pretty bad.”

“Think he knows about the boyfriend?”

Talon shrugged.

“Where did this tip come from? Or do I want to know?”

“Most likely don’t want to know. You know how it is… If enough pressure is applied to the right places anything is possible.”

Gabriella groaned a little louder this time as Cisco unceremoniously dumped her onto the sofa. Her dark hair covered her face, but just enough of her features were showing that it made me squint and take a step forward toward her.

“Holy shit,” I muttered under my breath.
