“How much money worth of cannabis is out there?”
I laughed. “Inquisitive little thing, aren’t ya?”
“Just curious I guess. Gives us something to chat about.”
“Well, dollar value I can’t say. A lot. That’s why the field has fencing, dogs, security cameras and several people patrolling the fields at all times.”
“Wow. How come we haven’t seen the people guarding the fields?”
“There’s another cabin. It’s smaller than the one we’re staying in, that’s hidden in the middle of the field. Ash and I periodically check on the operation, but it pretty much runs like a well-oiled machine for the most part.”
“I see.”
“You will see.” The words were barely out of my mouth when her foot caught on something and she began to tumble forward. Reaching out, I grabbed her upper arm and helped steady her on her feet.
Her cheeks reddened as she murmured a soft, “Thank you.”
“Don’t mention it.” Sliding my hand down her arm, I laced my fingers with hers and gave her hand a gentle squeeze. “Don’t want you falling and hurting yourself.”
Laughing, she lifted a brow at me. “Is that a fact.”
“Yeah.”
“Good thing I have you to look out for me then.”
“Yeah. It’s a good thing.” Giving her hand another squeeze, we continued to walk. I didn’t really need to lead the way. The path was wide enough for us both to walk it side by side with tall, aged trees lining both sides of the track. Despite it being the middle of day, the forest around us was so thick it was blocking out a good deal of the sunlight.
“Ash told me that you had a sister.”
I wasn’t sure if I was angry or not at Ash for opening his mouth. “Ash says a lot.”
She popped a shoulder. “I asked why you were gone this morning and he told me. He didn’t get into detail, but said you have nightmares of your sister’s death.”
“Fuck.” I breathed the words as I ran a hand through my hair. “Yeah. She was gunned down. We don’t know by who. She was a heroin addict so I can only guess it was over money she owed. It’s the way it goes.”
She nodded. “In the industry I work in drugs are pretty predominant. I don’t do them since I try to keep my body as clean as possible.” She gave me a smile. “Tried edibles a couple times. Didn’t care for it much though.”
“No, I stay away from the stuff myself as well. But there’s a huge market for it and it funds us. We produce some of the best outdoor grown marijuana in the state, maybe even the country.”
“Wow.”
I didn’t know if the wow she uttered meant she was impressed or just mulling over the information. We were almost there; the smell was becoming almost overwhelming at this point. A minute later the path broke out into the beginning of the large field surrounded by steel wired fencing. I’d called ahead so they knew we’d be coming and had put the dogs away, though I could hear them barking in the background, announcing our arrival.
“What kind of dogs are they?”
“Rottweilers. But don’t worry, they’ve been kenneled.”
Dropping Lola’s hand, I approached the gate. Stepping up to the keypad, I punched in the code. The gate beeped and unlocked. Pushing it open, I ushered her inside, following behind.
“This is insane.” Her eyes were as wide as saucers as she scanned the fields with plants so big that many were as tall as me.
“Yeah, they’re almost ready for harvest. The other half of the field has several large greenhouses so we can plant over the winter as well.”
“Wow.” She stepped ahead of me and began to walk down the rows. “Do you know what kind they are?”
I shrugged. “Honestly can’t tell you. I don’t tend to them personally, I just oversee the production and harvest.”
We came to the end of the row and reached the greenhouse. “Want to check it out? There are crops in there as well.”
