Chapter 11
Lola
“You guys are going to trust me going outside without being tied up?” I asked with a grin as I followed the men to the door. It was funny how things had morphed between the three of us since this morning. The moment they discovered I wasn’t who they thought I was they had become different people. They were actually laughing and joking with me as if I was their friend instead of their captive. It gave me hope.
“Oh we can get out some rope and tie you up if that’s what you’re into?” Phoenix wiggled his eyebrows at me, making me giggle like a schoolgirl while sending my heart fluttering. This was dangerous. The situation hadn’t changed – not really. I wasn’t allowed to leave and after I saw my surprise I would be put back into my room. But at least now I had a glimmer of a hope of freedom instead of the fear of being handed over to a group of men who sounded like they were worse than the ones I was under lock and key with currently.
With a snort of derision, I shook my head, attempting to hide the effect they were having on me. I feared I was doing a poor job, the men before me were quite astute.
Ash stepped aside as Phoenix opened the door and exited before me. He hesitated at the doorway, blocking my path. It was almost nightfall and there was an assortment of stunning hues of red and purple in the sky above. Being that I’d been stuck in the cabin for the past week, aside from my little escape attempt, I was almost as anxious to just breathe the warm summer air as I was to see what this surprise was.
His expression grew serious. “If you try to run, we will hunt you down and you’ll be locked in that room until this whole situation is resolved – are we clear?”
I nodded, a little taken aback by his shift in mood.
“We’re clear.”
With a nod, he disappeared outside with me in tow. Standing on the small wooden deck I scanned the yard. The first thing that caught my eyes was the truck they’d grabbed me and tossed me in, and their motorcycles. Finally, I spotted it. “Ohmygod! My car!” Forgetting what they’d told me before leaving the cabin I was off the porch and across the yard in an instant. Immediately I went to the driver’s side of the car and tried the door. It opened and I slipped inside with a smile on my face so wide that my cheeks ached, but I didn’t care. I’d really thought they’d just left it there to be stolen or raped for parts. But she hadn’t been left behind. She was intact and sitting in the yard waiting for me.
“This wasn’t here the other day.” Looking up at Ash and Phoenix I waited for a response.
“Yeah, we had it stashed away and fixed. Then moved it here this morning.”
“Wow.” Tears began to fill my eyes. They didn’t know how much the car meant to me – or how meaningful the gesture was for me. How could they? Leaning back in the seat I looked away from them, not wanting either of the men to see how much this moved me.
As I sat in the seat, a smile formed on my lips despite the tears lining my eyes. It struck me that they had no reason to bring the car to me if they planned on keeping or killing me. Did they? Wouldn’t they have just destroyed the evidence when they terminated me? That would be the sensible thing to do.
“Thank you…” I ran my hands along the outside of the steering wheel, feeling the leather under my fingertips.
“There’s more.” I looked out the windshield at Ash who was smiling. It was rare to see him smile, and it looked good on him. The smile gave his eyes a twinkle that forced you to smile back. Smiling he didn’t look intimidating, but approachable – and as sexy as sin.
Whoa… Sexy. That’s some dangerous thinking right there.
“Come on.” Phoenix offered his hand to me to assist me out of the car. I reluctantly accepted, not quite ready to leave the reminder of my father quite yet.
Ash walked past us and opened the trunk of the car.
Giving him the side-eye I looked up at Phoenix with hesitation. I’d seen lots of mafia movies. The trunk was never a place you wanted to be close to when you’d been kidnapped.
“It’s okay.” Giving me a little nudge with a hand at the small of my back, he moved me forward until I was looking into the trunk. Inside the trunk was a brown and beige military issue backpack. “Take it. Open it.”
Grabbing the backpack, I immediately got a whiff of perfume from the bag. Not just any perfume, but one of my favorite Chanel scents. An ex of mine was in the army and had left his pack at my place when we broke up – it had been such a bad breakup that he wasn’t even willing to come get his stuff. Was this the bag? Opening it up, I looked inside. It was filled with my stuff.
“Did you guys go get this for me?” I looked from one smiling face to the other.
“We had to go to your place in order to verify if you were really you. Since we figured we had taken the wrong girl it seemed like the least we could do was bring you some of your stuff until things are figured out.”
Walking to the front of the car, I placed the backpack on the hood and pulled out a few things as Ash closed the trunk. Make-up. Hairbrush. Clothing. A couple of books. My heart stopped beating for a split second when I pulled out the final item; it was the photo album of me and my adoptive parents. All the pictures included were of me growing up. Birthdays, vacations… The dam broke down and memories I’d been trying so hard for so long to not think about came flooding back to me.
“Are you all right?” Phoenix placed a hand on my shoulder. He was so close to me that I could feel the heat of his body against my back.
I couldn’t speak as a lump formed in my throat.
Don’t cry. Don’t cry. Don’t cry. I coached myself. But regardless of how I wanted to hold the tears back I was simply too strung out to keep them at bay. The emotions whirled around inside my head, making my stomach churn.
“Hey. It’s going to be fine.” Phoenix spun me to face him and drew me into his arms. “I promise.” His arms wrapped around me, holding me securely against his body.
My body tensed for a moment; I wanted to reject his affection, but I needed the comfort he was offering me. Wrapping my arms around his neck, I buried my face against his neck. His strong arms tightened around my waist, pulling me flush against his body.
