Chapter 9

Ash

“Here’s the address.” Phoenix passed me a slip of paper with a handwritten address on it.

“You’re a piece of work.” Grinning I shook my head.

“Told you she’d give me the information. The car was registered to a Lola Hastings. That’s the address of Miss Hastings. We’ll know everything we need to know in an hour. I know the area if you want to follow me.” He swung his leg over the bike and started it up. The black Harley Davidson low rider roared to life.

The only thing that sounded better to my ears than a Harley roaring to life was the sound of a woman screaming out my name when she orgasmed. It was a tight race, I’ll tell you that.

“Nothing like a road trip.” Pulling my helmet on, I fastened the strap and started my bike, which was nearly an exact replica of my partner’s, but gold in color.

Phoenix sped off, the Harley leaving a cloud of dirt in its wake, with me in hot pursuit.

The day was beautiful, and the wind whipping around me as we drove to our destination felt amazing. Being cooped up in that cabin for the past few days had taken a toll on me. The wonderful thing about California was that the bike never had to go away during the winter months. I’d moved here from Maine with my folks when I was fourteen. Seventeen years later I could still remember the bitterness of the winters in Maine. There were days where I missed the fun and beauty that came with a new snowfall, but those were few and far between.

Little more than an hour later I followed Phoenix into the parking lot of a four-story apartment building in a questionable part of town. I wouldn’t call it the hood, but it sure wasn’t somewhere I’d expect to see a lone female walking at night. Not unless they were hoping to make a few extra dollars that was.

We parked our bikes and locked our helmets inside the bikes’ saddlebags before proceeding to the building.

“So, what’s your plan to get into the building, genius?”

“Won’t be long before a chick comes out.”

I scoffed. “Yes, right. Flaunt that charm of yours.”

He rubbed at his beard. “Chicks dig the beard bro.”

“Yes. Sure.”

As if it was predetermined, as we reached the front doors I noticed a young woman, perhaps mid-twenties, coming off the elevators. Walking through the first set of doors, we hesitated until she opened the inner set.

“Hey baby, hold that door for me.” Phoenix said, giving her a smile and a wink.

A blush colored her cheeks and she gave him a blatant up and down look, holding the door open wide. “Oh you ride, do you?”

“I sure do, baby.” He hesitated at the open doorway giving her a quick up and down as I passed by him and into the building. “You like to ride?”

She twirled a lock of golden hair around her index finger and nodded. “From time to time.”

“Well, I’m in kind of a hurry today, but perhaps if we run into each other again we can call it fate and I can show you want it’s like to ride with me.”

Oh for fuck’s sakes, I groaned inwardly. His pick-up lines made me want to puke. The fact women actually fell for that shit blew my mind.

“Hope so.”

He gave her a nod and entered the building behind me, pulling the slip of paper from the inside pocket of his vest. “She’s on the fourth floor, apartment twelve.” As he hit the up button, the doors slid open immediately granting us access to an empty elevator.

Stepping inside I pressed the number four and a minute later we were standing in front of her door. Knocking, I waited a moment for someone to answer before giving Phoenix the go-ahead nod to gain entry. Sliding the small bag from his shoulder Phoenix grabbed his lock picking tool from within and had us into the apartment in less than a minute.

The first thing I noticed the moment the door was open was the smell. The apartment smelled like jasmine and rose – just like Gabriella – at least until she took a shower and used my body wash.

“Hello,” I called out as we entered deeper into the apartment. To the right of me was a small kitchen and the left a bathroom. The hallway led to a living room area with a single bedroom to the left. “I’ll check the bedroom while you scope out the living room and kitchen.”

The bedroom had a queen-sized bed with a colorful geometric design quilt on it, which looked to be handmade. She had a long dresser with mirror and a small white metal vanity piled up with make-up. What caught my eye though was her dresser. It was neat and tidy with a half dozen pictures of her and two older people. I’d assume they were her parents since they were with her in pictures when she was young. At first glance nothing in the bedroom said she had anything to do with Raven or the club.
