Chapter 6
Lola
The humiliation of what had transpired the previous day had plagued my thoughts all day and throughout the night. I may have gotten a couple hours of sleep at best by the time the sun had come up the next morning. They hadn’t come for me again. Being left alone with my thoughts was both a blessing and a curse. I’d tried to hear what they were saying when I heard the murmur of voices, but it was useless, so I eventually gave up trying.
I just knew I had to escape – somehow.
It’s not like they’d been kind when they’d kidnapped me, but for some reason while I was in the shower something had changed. How could someone be so cruel as to humiliate me like that? It was baffling. I hated that I had to sleep in that monster’s clothing, it had a faint smell of detergent and his aftershave on it that kept reminding me of him, but my clothing was gone and it was either this or nothing.
My stomach grumbled as I lay on the bed looking up at the ceiling, there were 92 knots in the planks of wood on the ceiling. They hadn’t offered for me to eat with them last night, instead they’d opened the door placed a flimsy tray containing some sandwiches and a jug of water on the floor next to the door and proceeded to lock it again. It was for the best though; I didn’t want to see either one of them right now.
Voices, followed by footsteps, came down the hallway drawing nearer to my room – it was Phoenix and Ash. As they approached the door I sat up, my heart beginning to race in my chest as heat colored my cheeks. Was this another food drop or was I going to be allowed out for a little while?
There was a clink as the lock in the door disengaged and the door swung open to reveal my kidnappers. Phoenix stepped into the room and gathered the empty tray while Ash’s eyes focused on me. “Get up, you’re going to meet the boss.”
A chill ran down my spine. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to see the boss or not. But if he saw me and recognized that I wasn’t this Gabriella person then maybe I could be let go? Or be killed… Would they let me know when they discovered the truth or just get rid of me, no questions asked?
“All right.” There was only one way to find out. Sliding my legs over the edge of the bed, I stood and walked toward the men, doing everything in my power not to look away or allow myself to cower, despite what happened the previous day.
As I walked past Ash his arm jutted out and he grabbed my upper arm. As he leaned into me, a shiver ran down my spine, both from fear but also from anticipation. No matter how cruel or horrible these men were to me, I couldn’t control my body’s reaction to them. I’m not sure exactly what it was about them that was drawing me like a moth to a flame – whether it was their domineering presence or the way they both oozed of sex appeal and danger – but each time they touched me, my body reacted.
“If you try anything... Do anything, besides be a good little girl. I don’t care what the boss says, you’ll be punished. Are we clear?”
I swallowed the lump in my throat as I forced myself to lift my chin and straighten to my full height, my gaze fixing on his. “Crystal. The faster you discover I’m not the person you think I am, the quicker I can get out of this fucking nightmare.”
Phoenix scoffed as he brushed past me and began his way down the hallway, my empty tray in his hands. Ash released my arm, and with a hand at the small of my back gave me a little shove forward. “Go on.”
Rubbing at my arm that Ash had grabbed I walked down the hallway and into the living area, where there was a man sitting on one of the armchairs. He was wearing a black leather vest, nearly identical to the one the guys had worn when picking me up, but his said President across the right side at the chest. The first thing I noticed was a scar that ran along his collarbone from his ear to nearly his chin. His blonde hair was tied into a ponytail and his eyes were fixed on me.
I was waiting for him to say I wasn’t Gabriella, but he didn’t. Instead, after a moment of staring at me, he nodded. “Good morning Gabriella. Take a seat.” He motioned to the sofa.
Stopping in my tracks I didn’t proceed to the sofa, there was no point, this would be over soon. “Listen, I keep telling these –” My eyes narrowed as I spotted Phoenix coming from the kitchen, “–these, goons. I’m not Gabriella. My name is Lola Hastings.”
He sighed, steepling his fingers before him as he leaned back in the chair. “Look. I’m not sure what game you’re trying to play, but it’s not going to work. I’ve seen you dozens of times Gabriella. And you know me. I’m not sure what kind of idiots you think we are. Either way, I highly suggest you quit it now, park you ass on the couch and do as you’re told.”
I didn’t move. I was paralyzed in place. What in the hell was going on? Were they all mad or blind?
“Sit down Gabriella,” Ash growled, his mouth so close to my ear that the heat from his breath sent a chill through my body.
Pulled from my momentary lapse, I crossed the room and sat down on the sofa, taking the cushion closest to their boss. How in the hell was I going to convince them? I had to get them to check out my social media. They’d believe me then. They seemed to be convinced I was this Gabriella person and were refusing to even humor me on it.
Talon’s piercing blue eyes stared into mine. “Now, Raven wants confirmation that you’re fine. So you’re going to tell him you’re fine and untouched. That’s all you’re going to say or you will be a very sorry woman. Are we clear?”
I hesitated a moment before nodding. “Yes. We’re clear.” It’s not like I could have given him my location since I had no fucking clue where I was.
“Good.” Pulling his phone from his pocket, it took him a minute to connect the call, but a gruff voice answered hello. “This is Talon. I want to speak to Raven.”
“This is Earl. He’s not here.”
“He wanted confirmation that we have Gabriella and that she’s fine. This is your confirmation.” He pressed a couple buttons changing the call to a video call and then turning the phone so I was in view of the camera. The man on the other end looked older, maybe mid-fifties with long graying hair. He had a leather vest on with the label of Vice President under his name.
“Are you doing okay, Gabriella?” he asked.
I frowned as I looked from Ash to Phoenix and then to Talon before I looked back at the man on the phone. Had I just entered the Twilight Zone? He just confirmed it was me? I really had no idea what to do or say at this point. The words “I’m fine,” came from my mouth without much thought, pretty much sealing my fate and marking me as Gabriella.
“Don’t worry, we’re coming for you. You won’t need to be there much longer.”
Again, I was struck silent, unsure of what to do or say at this point. I doubted I’d be much better off with this other group.
