Chapter 4
Lola
“Can you be reasonable, or do I need to toss you back into the room and feed you in big silver dishes on the floor like an animal?” The slightly shorter one with the hypnotizing blue eyes asked.
My eyes narrowed at him as I weighed my options. The door – my freedom – was so close it hurt. All I had to do was take three steps. But I knew he was faster and stronger – I didn’t have delusions about that at all. If I was going to get out of here then I’d have to outsmart them. Maybe if I pretended to play along I could get a feel for them?
Spotting the food on the coffee table, my stomach grumbled as I caught a whiff of the burgers and fries. Accepting food wasn’t an admittance of weakness, it would be stupid not to. It wouldn’t hurt to eat – I needed my energy, right?
There was a navy colored cloth sofa with matching armchairs on either side of it. I took a chair closest to the door. The men watched me as I sat down before seating themselves, their eyes not leaving me for a second. As tempting as it was, I didn’t grab a burger, instead waiting for them to hand me one.
The men seated themselves, the taller one with the brown eyes and beard sitting across from me while the other positioned himself on the sofa closer to me.
“I guess we should introduce ourselves since we’re going to play the I’m not who you think I am game,” the one on the sofa said. “I’m Ash.” He jerked his thumb at the other man. “And he’s Phoenix.”
My eyes narrowed as I stared from one to the other. “Are those your real names?”
A hint of a grin touched Phoenix’s lips. “As real as you’ll ever get.” Grabbing a burger wrapped in brown paper he tossed it over to me, followed by fries although he slid the bag of fries a little more carefully. “There’s beer in the case next to you if you want one.”
“Can I have some water?”
The two men exchanged looks. Was water such an odd request?
“Yeah, I’ll get you a glass.” Ash stood and left the room. Craning my neck, my gaze followed him to see he’d entered a surprisingly big kitchen. Bigger than my kitchen in my apartment, though that wasn’t saying much I supposed. As I waited for the water I unwrapped the burger and took a bite, and for a moment was distracted from my situation to take pleasure in the flavoring; it had a nice smokey flavor that you had to appreciate. Not realizing how hungry I really was, I had the burger devoured before Ash returned with the beverage.
Both men ate in silence, never taking their eyes off me. Part of me said to just be quiet and not cause waves, but if I was being held, even if I was being held by mistake, the least they could do was tell me why I was here.
“May I ask why you’re after this Gabriella person?”
Ash cocked a brow up at me, putting the bottle of beer to his lips and draining the contents. Lowering the bottle, he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “We still going to play the I’m not who you think I am game, huh?”
Keeping his gaze, I popped a shoulder. “Got any better way to pass the time?”
“Okay. Fine. I’ll play along. We have you because your old man needs to do something for us. When he does what he’s supposed to then you get to leave.”
“Okay.” So I was going to get to leave – maybe even soon. “What does he need to do?”
The men huffed and gave their heads a shake. It was Phoenix that replied. “This shouldn’t take long if he cares anything for you. Lily goes free then you go free. It’s a fair trade.”
I felt good – for a minute. Then it dawned on me, the realization hitting me like a ton of bricks. When they discovered I wasn’t who they think I was – what then? My freedom was dependent on an exchange: Gabriella for whatever they wanted from Gabriella’s old man. When they discovered Gabriella was still with her husband – what then? Could they even let me go since this was a kidnapping? And it wasn’t as though these men were upstanding citizens; they were hired thugs.
If I didn’t get away, I was fucked. There was no way around it.
Grabbing the glass of water Ash had placed in front of me, I drank it nearly all down. The cold liquid soothed my dry throat.
Once the men finished eating they fixed their gazes on me.
“Time to head back to your room.” Ash stood and walked over to me. “The question is, are you going to go willingly or is this going to be another ordeal that’ll severely test my patience.”
Straightening my back, I lifted my chin and gave him a challenging stare. “I want a light. It’s pitch black in there and I can’t even see where I’m going when I have to use the bathroom.”
“You have a window and it’s a full moon tonight.”
“Doesn’t give any light at all.”
Ash looked over at Phoenix then back at me. “Here’s the problem. If I give you a lamp you could intentionally break it and use the glass to try and cut one of us. As I said before, this isn’t our first rodeo.”
“A flashlight then.”
