“Great.” Phoenix appeared in the doorway. “Oh, that smells good.”
“What’s up?” I looked up from the corn to see that Phoenix seemed pretty excited about something.
“Talon and Gabriella are on the way. They’ll be here within an hour and they have news.”
I should have felt good about this. I could go back to my old life. But I didn’t. Forcing a smile to my face I answered, “That’s great. We’ll finally be able to get out of here.”
Phoenix’s smile faltered as he entered the room and looked down at me. “Yup. We’ll all be able to get back to our lives soon.”

I didn’t want to hear the news that things were finally coming to an end. Sure, I wanted Lily to have her life back and the proper people to be in jail and Lola to be able to go home. But I’m a selfish bastard and I was happy with how things had been between the three of us over the past couple of weeks and I had no desire for it to end – at least not so soon.
As we ate our supper I only halfway listened to the lively banter that went on between Phoenix and Lola. Decisions needed to be made. I needed to take Lola aside and tell her how I was feeling about her. I didn’t want her to leave. I didn’t want her going back to her former life, I wanted her here – with me.
We were just finishing up and putting the dishes away – Lola had been upgraded to real silverware a week ago – when we heard a vehicle pulling up to the front of the cabin. Pressing start on the dishwasher, I walked over to the kitchen window and confirmed that it was Talon and Gabriella. At least I believe it was Gabriella, there was a black hood over her head so I couldn’t say with one hundred percent certainty.
“They’re here guys,” I stated with a heavy heart.
Talon and Gabriella were entering the cabin when the three of us entered the living area. Talon’s face was beaming, while Gabriella’s had the normal fuck-you look, though she did seem to lighten up when her eyes spotted Lola.
“Good, you’re all here.”
Where the fuck else would we be, I said to myself.
“Yeah,” Phoenix sat down on an armchair with Lola perching herself on the arm of the chair while Gabriella and Talon seated themselves on the sofa. Propping myself up against the wall near the door, I crossed my arms over my chest and waited for the news that I really didn’t want to hear if I were to be honest with myself.
“Well, we’ll make this short. Gabriella has come through, the police have their man and they’ve issued a release to Lily. They’re not going to pursue the escape from prison charge, taking Lily’s time in prison as time served.”
“That’s great.” Phoenix smiled. “Thank you Gabriella for making this right.”
Gabriella shrugged. “It’s all about business and it’s not good business to have us at odds with your group. I meant what I said when I left here. I want our two groups to be able to co-exist. It isn’t productive for our groups to be at odds with each other. Raven couldn’t seem to get that through his thick skull. He insisted on putting pride in front of common sense. I don’t plan on making those same mistakes.”
“So, you’re now heading the Revenants?” Lola asked.
“I am. And I came here because I was hoping you’d do something for me.”
A frown creased my brow. What in the hell would Gabriella need from Lola?
“Okay. What?” Lola replied.
Pulling a small black leather backpack from her back, Lola unzipped it and pulled out a swab in a vial. “I’d like to ensure that we’re in fact twins like we expect. I’m sure it’ll come back positive, but it would be nice to know.” Standing, she walked over to Lola and passed her the vial. “You just swab your cheek and put it in the vial. I’ll do the rest and let you know.”
Lola looked at the vial and eventually nodded, accepting the vial and swab. She did as requested and passed the sample back. “How long will it take?”
“Not long,” Gabriella replied, taking the sample and placing it back into her backpack. “I know someone who can fast-track it for us. We’ll know in a week or so at the latest.”
I looked back and forth from one woman to the other. They didn’t need a DNA test to know they were twins – at least I didn’t – but considering how much of a shocker the situation was, I supposed that I could see why. The only real difference was that Gabriella had a harsher look than Lola. She’d been through some shit and it showed, but she was still as stunning as her sister.
“Well, I guess this means we’re done here. As per my part of the bargain, Ash and Phoenix could you gather Lola’s belongings and escort her home. I’m sure she’s anxious to return to her life before we hijacked it.” He turned to Lola to speak to her directly. “You do have my apologies. We never meant to bring an innocent into club matters. I hope you can understand the extenuating circumstances.”
Lola nodded. “I understand. There won’t be any trouble from me. You have my word.”
“Right. Well, I feel that it’s only fair to give you a little something to make up for the amount of time you’ve been held here.” Reaching into the inner pocket of his vest he pulled out a brown, sealed envelope and passed it to Lola. “We appreciate it and Lily in particular appreciates it.”
Lola shrugged and gave him a smile. “It was a misunderstanding. That’s fine. But thank you.” She didn’t open the envelope but kept it secure in her hands on her lap.
