“Yeah, I know. At least I’m not tied up this time. That’s some progress I suppose.”
“Always looking on the bright side, baby. That’s what I love about ya.” He closed the door before I could respond.
Love me? Was he being serious about his feelings to me or was he just saying that because it was a common expression? I was leaning toward the last option, but…
The doors to the front of the truck opened, the truck bounced from the weight of the massive men getting in, and this was followed by the doors slamming shut and the truck roaring to life. Feeling along the leather seat I found the seat belt and wiggled my way over to it, strapping it around myself. “You could have at least let me see to put my seatbelt on.”
There was chuckling from up front but neither man replied.
The ride back to the cabin was longer than I expected, at least it felt that way since no one spoke a word. A couple of times I nearly nodded off to sleep until Ash would hit a bump and jar me back awake. When the truck finally slowed down and the sounds of birds chirping and the tires on gravel began, I gave a sigh of relief. We were almost home.
Home? Where in the hell did that come from?
The cabin where I’d been held captive was hardly home. Maybe this wasn’t real, but the start of Stockholm syndrome? Could you even get that in such a short period of time? Hell, it was just as good of an explanation as any for falling for and getting with two men who’d kidnapped me at the same time.
The truck was shifted into park and the engine cut.
“You can take the blindfold off now,” Ash said.
Pulling the blindfold from my face, I blinked a couple times as my eyes adjusted to the bright light. The guys were already out of the truck and Ash was opening the back door for me. Scooting myself to the edge of the seat, I hopped out, glad to be able to stretch my legs.
“Now what?” I asked as Ash slammed the door shut.
Sliding his arm around my shoulders, Ash led me to the front door of the cabin. “Well, I think all we can do is wait.”
Stopping, I turned to face him and slid my arms up his chest. “Do you have anything in mind that we should do while waiting?”
A little growl came from him as he brushed his lips across mine. “Don’t know how long we’ll have to wait, but I’m sure we can figure something out.”
Chapter 21
Two Weeks Later
Lola
“Is it weird that this feels normal?” I asked Ash as I assisted him in making a roast dinner of beef with mashed potatoes and corn on the cob for supper. I was on shucking the corn to throw in the pot duty while he seasoned the roast.
“What do you mean?” Ash looked up from the roast to give me his full attention.
“Well, I mean, the three us have been in this cabin for several weeks now and you guys have taught me about the crops. We’ve gone on hikes in the woods. It’s like our days have become normalized. Like the three of us have become…” Blushing, I looked away and pretended to be too interested in shucking the corn in my hand to finish what I was about to say. I couldn’t believe I’d almost called him and Phoenix my family. Weird or what.
“No. Tell me. What are you trying to say?”
With a shrug I shook my head. “Nothing. It was silly.” Finished with the last cob, I set it on the cutting board with the other five and slid it across the counter to Ash. “Done.”
He gave me a long stare. For a minute I thought he’d press the issue, but he didn’t. “Time has gone by quickly, hasn’t it?”
“It has. Talon said it wasn’t going to be long now, didn’t he?”
Ash nodded. “Yeah. He said she was going to have it done within the next few days and then you can go one with the rest of your life.”
I chewed at my lower lip and nodded. The thought of going back home made me sad, so sad in fact that if I looked at him directly at that moment I’d probably shed a tear or two. How in the hell I’d gotten so attached to the men who’d kidnapped me so soon was beyond me.
Could we even have a relationship after this was all over? I didn’t know. No promises were made on either end. It was as though we were all avoiding the idea of going back to our normal lives.
The front door opened and then closed. “Hey guys. Ash. Lola. You guys in here?” Phoenix called out from the other room.
“We’re in here brother,” Ash called back.
