Chapter 8

Phoenix

After Talon took off, I grabbed a six pack of beer from the fridge and brought it into the living room where Ash was already reclined on the sofa, flipping through the television channels. We never agreed on television shows. He’d undoubtedly find some documentary on beavers or something equally as boring that he’d decide was a must watch. There’s no way he watched television with women.

Placing the six pack on the coffee table, I pulled one from the flimsy plastic ring and cracked the top. Bringing the cold beverage to my mouth, I took a big gulp and savored the flavor. The raspberry was prevalent with some undertones I couldn’t quite detect – vanilla perhaps. One thing we did have in common was the fact we relished a good craft brew, although admittedly he had a much better palette then I did.

“Where did that one come from?” Ash asked, sitting up and pulling one off the rings. He brought the can up to eye level to examine the label. “Raspberry smoothie?” He cocked a brow up at me and cracked it open.

“Looked interesting. I bought a half-dozen flavors at the brewery.”

“Good enough.” He took a drink and winced.

It took only a moment to realize why he was grimacing. “The lip still bothering ya?”

“She nearly bit my lip clean through, for fuck’s sakes.” He chuckled as he said it.

Laughing along with him, I shrugged. “Yeah, she’s got a little fire to her.”

“She liked the kiss by the way.”

“So much she bit ya to end it.”

“Nah….” He grinned. “I mean before she came to her senses.”

Laughing a little harder, I took another drink and sighed. “Listen, something is bothering me.”

“Man, if it’s about me and her and what happened today.”

“Nah. It’s not that. It’s about that call with Raven.”

“What about it?” His interest was fully on me now, his brow creasing.

I rubbed at my beard, making a mental note to give it a little trim. I was getting a little scraggly. I’d found my first gray hair the other day nestled in the dark beard. I plucked that motherfucker right away. I wasn’t at the point in my life yet to accept growing old gracefully. “Didn’t you think the call was a bit off?”

“How so?” Despite his question I could tell he was thinking what I was thinking.

“Well, if she was my wife and they had kidnapped her then I’d be a little more excited to see that she was okay. And her… you’d think she’d be a little more excited to see him and know he was doing something to get her out of this situation.” I paused to finish off the can and grab a new one. “Don’t you think?”

Ash rubbed the back of his neck with his hand. “Hard to say. Maybe they aren’t on good terms right now? Maybe they are feeling overwhelmed. Could be a lot of reasons for the lack of excitement.”

“And him asking if she’d lost weight. Strange. It’s not like she’s been with us long.”

He huffed. “Camera angles can make chubby girls look thin and vice versa. Doesn’t mean nothing.”

“Don’t you feel it though?” I pressed. I needed for him assure me my intuition wasn’t off.

“Sure. It’s strange. I’ll give you that. But come on. What’s the alternative? She’s not his old woman and we got the wrong girl? That seems like a pretty big coincidence that this girl that looks exactly like his old lady just so happened to be at the same place we were tipped off that she’d be at? In fact, she looks so identical that even her husband thinks we have his old woman.”

“Yeah. I know it’s insane. Just got a nagging feeling.”

“I also had a nagging feeling in my dick today after chasing her down. Trust me, I’d love for her not to be his woman. If she wasn’t then she’d be up for grabs and I’d be able to fuck her until my dick was raw.”

Cocking a brow at him, I chuckled. “You really think she’d be interested in any part of your tiny-assed dick after today.”

He put up his index finger, grinning. “First off, my dick is perfectly average.” He added a second finger. “Second of all, the way she was moaning and grinding against my dick this afternoon I’m pretty sure I could get her to spread those beautiful, long legs of hers for me.”

“I’m thinking that just to ease our minds, let’s do some snooping and check into the license plate of her car.”
