“Ash… Phoenix. Where are you two?” Talon’s voice came from the other room. Ash immediately released me and I scrambled from his lap, brushing a lock of hair from my face that had fallen over my eyes. I sat down beside him, hands clasped in front of me on my lap, feeling as if I was a teenager being caught by my parents making out with my boyfriend. If Talon thought something was going on between me and my guards he might replace them. I was just starting to get a feel for the men and didn’t want to start afresh getting to know someone else. Despite the conflicts I’ve had with the two of them so far, I had a feeling deep down that no matter how angry they got they wouldn’t actually harm me – I couldn’t be so sure about someone else from the club.
A moment later Talon appeared in the doorway. “What are you two doing in here? Something happen?”
All three men looked at me and I shook my head.
“Why is there a tray of sandwiches on the floor?” he inquired giving the tray a little kick with the toe of his black leather boot.
“I dropped it. Phoenix thought something happened and came to try to be the hero. It’s all good.” Ash stood.
“Fine.” Talon nodded, “Raven wants to see her for himself and I’m expecting his call. Get her up and into the living area. Turning, he made his way back down the hallway and disappearing from sight, expecting us to dutifully follow behind.
The men exchanged a look, then Ash leaned down grabbed my arm and pulled me to my feet. “Come on, let’s get this over with.” We walked to the door with Phoenix leading the way. Reaching the doorway, he stopped and turned, looking down at me. “Don’t try anything or I’ll cuff you to the fucking bed and make you piss your pants.”
I didn’t know for sure if he was serious or not, but I wasn’t about to tempt him. Nodding I replied, “Okay. Promise.”
Following the men, I found Talon sitting where he had previously, and I took the spot I’d sat in during the last call. This was it. Raven was going to see me and tell them that I wasn’t the girl. What happened next would be out of my hands, I just prayed that they would let me go and not kill me upon discovering the truth.
Pulling the phone from his vest, Talon waited for the call, which came within a couple minutes of us sitting down. Talon put the phone on speaker as he answered with a gruff hello.
“Talon. It’s Raven. I want to talk to my old lady.”
Talon pressed a button and the image flicked onto the screen and he held the phone up to my face. When the man on the screen looked at me there wasn’t a look of relief or affection in his gaze, certainly not the emotions you’d expect to see on someone who was supposed to love you. Why?
As I stared at the man who was staring at me, I found myself sinking into the shadows a little. I’m not sure why I felt the need to hide; I just knew I didn’t want to be given to him. I’d happily stay in my little dungeon room before going to Raven and his club.
“Are you okay?” he asked without a hint of affection in his tone.
I nodded.
“Have they hurt you in any way?”
Shaking my head, I kept my lips tightly shut. For some reason he wasn’t recognizing me as being someone other than his wife.
“Have you eaten? You look thin. Have those fuckers been starving you? I’ll murder every last one of them if they have.”
Knowing I had to say something, I replied with a simple, “Yes. I’m fine.” Accompanied by a nod.
“Fine. Take me off video Talon.”
Talon did as requested and the men began to chat privately.
When I looked back up, Ash and Phoenix were giving me odd stares. They looked about as confused by the interaction as I felt.
“That was short and not so sweet,” Phoenix finally said.
I shrugged.
“Come on.” He jerked his thumb to the hallway leading to my room. “Time to go back.”
Standing, I made my way back to my prison. As I approached the door my eyes caught sight of the sandwiches and my stomach grumbled. “I’m hungry.”
“Get in there and behave and I’ll think about getting you something else to eat.”
Entering the room, I spun around and my gaze locked with Phoenix’s. “Thank you.”
He didn’t respond, aside from a nod, and then closed the door, locking it.
With a sigh, I made my way back to the bed and flopped onto it. This was all so surreal. There were pieces of the puzzle I was missing – fuck that, everyone seemed to be missing. If I figured out what they were then maybe I could get out of this alive.
The one plus of all of this was that the men liked me – or at least desired me. I could use that. I just had to come up with a plan.
