Chapter Twenty-One

Alyssa

My eyes flutter shut as he places a kiss on my lips. There is something soft about his touch. His lips don’t force mine apart as recklessly as they usually do. His lips moving over mine feel like a breeze. It’s a gentle and unrushed motion.

How did I get here?

After he left my room earlier, I grabbed my phone and made a distressed call to Giovanni. “What do I do? I don’t think he is interested anymore.”

Giovanni mocks me. “Is Viper tired of fucking you already?”

The uncouth jerk. “This isn’t good for the plan,” I say.

“It sure as hell isn’t. How are you going to get close enough to kill him when he can’t even stand the sight of you?”

“That’s not what’s happening—”

“I am truly surrounded by morons,” he mutters in the background. “Listen, and listen good, woman. Men like Antonio and I have one weakness—are you ready to hear it?”

“Yes,” I whisper, looking around.

“We are lonely losers,” he stops and laughs. “Pathetic loners who have seen the very worst of the world. So, if you want to get a loser like Antonio loser into your web, you have to act like you understand him.”

“Bu—but how do I do that?”

“Good question—that’s your problem.”

Then I hear the beep from the other end of the call as he hangs up.

Just as I tucked the phone away, Mary entered the room and looked at the perfectly made bed in surprise.

“Well, that’s a first. I thought my boss was in here a few minutes ago.”

I sigh. “He isn’t in the mood, or he is tired of me, maybe.”

She chuckles. “I doubt that’s the case. I’ll go prepare your evening bath.”

“How do you know that he isn’t tired of me?” I ask, stripping off my lingerie.

“For one, no hostage here has ever been as protected as you are. He gives orders to us every day about what you need to eat and drink, and what you should wear. If she asks for anything, let her have it,” she says, imitating his gruff tone and making me chuckle.

“Maybe he is just being nice.”

She stops and looks at me. “Have your nipples always been big?”

“Mary!” I cry, covering my breasts.

“I am just saying, the last time I saw nipples as big as yours was when my daughter-in-law was pregnant.”

I chuckle. “There is no way I am pregnant.”

She stops and stares at me. “Do you know how often I change your sheets? Are you taking birth control?”

“Can we stick to talking about Antonio?” I ask, walking to the bathroom. Alarm bells are going off in my mind though. I realize now that I’m about a week late. That scares me more than I want to admit. I’m probably just late due to stress. I refuse to think about being pregnant right now.

“Case in point, he doesn’t hate you. It’s impossible that he hates you.”

She helps me into the bath, and I settle in.
