Wait. Hold on a bloody minute. Why does this road look very familiar?
Because it’s the same one Daniil took down when he was taking you out.
Oh, my God…no!
Yup! You’re toast!
“You son of a…” I barked at the officer, who was already making a phone call.
I struggled with the door, but it was locked.
“Yes, I have her,” he said to the person on the other line.
The officer was obviously working for Daniil, and as he drove me back to the mansion, I saw Daniil stepping out with his goons around him.
“No, no,” I lamented softly as the weight of my hopelessness pressed down on my shoulders, practically crushing me.
There was no limit to what this man could do, even from the comfort of his home. I’d known he was well-connected, but I hadn’t thought he was powerful enough to buy the loyalty of the cops—the same people who were supposed to guide and protect us.
How would I ever escape this monster? Was I bound to him forever? Why wouldn't he just let me be?
My heart had shattered, and my breath had ceased.
There he was, standing in his compound with that evil smirk etched on his face.
Was this the end for me? Was there still hope of getting away?
Chapter 14 – Daniil
Time seemed to have frozen, making everything around me happen in slow motion. There she was: Vivian Kennedy, my milaya, tucked in the front passenger seat of the police car. She was glaring at me, fury etched into her features. There was hatred in her eyes and also a hint of hopelessness, causing her to bite her lip and furrow her brows. Of course, she’d feel hopeless. I’d just destroyed her little plan to escape. It must have really hit her hard since she was so close to freedom.
I stood there, my stomach roiling and my hands balled into fists.
She had the effrontery, the nerve, to deceive me for as long as she had. What was she thinking? That she would get away with it? Did she not know by now that I was inescapable, that I always got what I wanted?
She was a girl with balls—I knew that—and it was one of the many reasons why I was drawn to her. But I had to admit: This stunt was something that I didn’t see coming. It was such a surprise—a somewhat pleasant one. It was rather brave of her to try to escape the monster that had her bound. It was admirable.
Vivian had fooled me for almost a week.
Now, I was starting to feel that rage return. I’d let down my guard for a split second, and she’d taken advantage of my kindness. She’d exploited it and tried to flee when faced with the first opportunity. What this meant was that she’d been planning this for a while now, maybe even since the day she’d realized her new reality.
All that sex, those great times we’d spent together in bed, were all fake?
Fuck!
Inside, I laughed wickedly, a mix of anger and admiration filling me from head to toe.
Good one, milaya. You’re not just a beautiful model; you’re also an actress.
I thought she deserved an Oscar for her marvelous and outstanding performance. It wasn’t easy to fool a mafia boss like myself, so her deception was something I found all the more infuriating. I was supposed to have seen this coming from a mile away because nothing ever caught me off guard. I was always prepared for anything, expecting the worst and hoping for the best. However, in her case, I’d completely let go of all my training and years of experience. I had to hand it to her; she did well winning my trust.
History would never repeat itself ever again.
How did that saying go?
Once bitten, twice shy.
She’d taught me never to lower my guard and always listen to my instincts.
