He shakes his head. “I don’t know anything.”

“Speaking of,” Logan interrupts. “Cam, can you help me out with what we talked about?”

“What?” Marc’s eyes go wide. “Cam knows what you’re doing, and I don’t?”

“Look out, Marc.” Cam stands from the table with a smug smile as he walks backward out of the kitchen. “There might be a new best friend in town.”

“Don’t worry.” Logan leaves my lap, hugging my brother. “You’re still my best friend. And Cam doesn’t know what we’re doing either.”

“Now I’m curious, too,” Ali admits.

“Okay, it’s really not all that exciting. Everyone is hyping this up, but please keep your expectations low.” Logan looks to me.

I can’t help but smile at her worry. We could sit on the couch all day doing absolutely nothing, and it would still be the best birthday I’ve ever had, simply because she’s with me.

“Love you,” my girl says to my brother. “See you guys tomorrow,” she adds before hugging Ali and taking off to wherever Cam went.

“Is everything okay?” Marc takes a seat across from me.

Ali joins the conversation, sitting next to my brother.

“Yeah. Everything is great. She’s good,” I tell them both with a content smile. “She’s really good.”

“How crazy is that about the letter her mom wrote her?” my brother asks, not mentioning the others from the wooden box. Maybe Logan didn’t fill our friends in on that part. If so, I love that she kept that secret only for me.

“You guys might not know this, but I’m not emotional,” Ali begins.

“Wait, really?”

She flips me the bird. “But even I almost cried when she told me.”

“Thank God her mom wrote that. That was the closure Logan needed. She’s like a whole new person today.”

“Baby, you ready?” Logan wears a bright smile, quickly popping her head back into the kitchen.

“Happy birthday.” Marc hugs me. “Love you, man.”

“Love you too. See you tomorrow,” I tell him before reaching out my fist for Ali, saying goodbye.

I find a bundled-up Logan waiting by the front door with all my winter gear in her hands.

“I would like to keep this surprise going, but I have a feeling you’re not going to let me drive my car in this weather.”

“Fuck no. Not in that tiny Honda and not if there’s ice on the roads. Let’s take my truck. You can drive it if you want.”

“I’m gonna pass on that. I don’t know if I trust myself with that thing.”

“Okay. Where am I driving us?”

“Get in the car, and I’ll tell you.” Logan shoots me a smirk over her shoulder as she takes off towards my truck.

Chapter 20

Logan

“I probably should’ve warned you that the coffee shop is closed on Sundays.” Eli parks his truck in front of Trev’s empty and dark coffee shop, an hour outside of campus.

“We aren’t going to the coffee shop. We’re going skating.”
