I nod once again.
“Remind me of her name.”
“Logan Leo.”
“And her age?”
“Twenty-two.”
“Does she have any allergies that you’re aware of?”
“I don’t think so.” I shake my head.
“Any medical history we need to know about?”
“Yes. She donated her kidney a little over a year ago, so she only has one,” I tell Carla with a shaky voice.
“And could she be pregnant?”
“No.”
“Yes,” my brother says.
I snap my head in his direction as Marc looks straight at me, his eyes full of unspoken words.
“She’s pregnant, EJ.”
“What?” Ali asks in shock.
My mouth drops open, but words are unable to escape me.
My brother and I hold each other’s stare as I repeat his words in my head over and over again.
Did I hear him correctly? Judging by the look on his face, telling me he didn’t want me to find out this way, yes, I did indeed hear him correctly.
“Logan’s pregnant?” I ask for confirmation, my voice soft, almost inaudible.
He doesn’t respond with words but instead nods his head in agreement.
In a daze, I find my way to a seat in the waiting room, needing to sit down before my knees give out. Marc sits directly next to me, silently waiting for me to say something.
“Logan is going to be a mom?” My voice breaks, my eyes once again brimming with tears.
But this time, they’re happy tears because Logan, the best person I know, is going to be a mother. The mother of my child.
“But she doesn’t want kids,” I remind both Marc and myself. “Was she scared?”
“A little bit, yeah. But she was also really happy.”
“She was?” My voice cracks, but my tone is full of hope.
He doesn’t respond with a yes or no, he just looks at me with sympathy, but I don’t know why. This is the best thing that could’ve happened to us.
“I’m going to be a dad?” I question as the warm tears fall down my cheeks.
“EJ,” Marc sighs. “She was really early still and that accident...” His voice drifts off into nothing, unable to form the words.
My breathing hitches. He’s right. Logan might not even be okay, let alone this baby I just found out about.
